Morning

Help please!

The Harvard Citation & Bibliography Referencing feature of Word 2010 (which used to work very well) is now returning a message of: Invalid source specified when attempting to create a citation. The Bibliography message is: There are no sources in the current document. Have tried all the other styles also.

I have searched online. However, I found little info and it mainly applied to Word 2007. Did try to reinstall the Style to the Bibliography folder. Reinstalled Office Professional 2010. Still no joy. Working on a lit review presently and really need to manage my reading and referencing.

I am aware of EndNote (seems an expensive product)- but would rather work with what I have in Word 2010, if that is an option.

Has anyone encountered this and successfully overcome this problem? Would really appreciate feedback.

Thanks

Vivienne (Purcell)

Hi Vivienne
I ran in to problems with Word 2010 as well and for the same reasons am not using endnote
so am just keeping a simple log of references near end of file.
I will give the referencing feature another go  maybe in a couple of weeks and if I get any good of it
I will let you know.  Hope you are getting on well. Hetty

Hi Hetty

Happy New Year

Thanks for that. Am disappointed to have run into this problem as it would be so much easier to structure and plan the lit review by referencing as it progresses (very slooowly!). Am hopeful that someone in the group will have found the solution.

Regards

Vivienne

I would use something like the comment feature  and use something like http://www.bibme.org/ and just paste it in as need be

Try out Zotero  (http://www.zotero.org/).

It is a free referencing system and great way to get references very easily from the internet (similar to Endnote). Download zotero for firefox and the word plugin and you should be good to go - much easier than inputting each reference into Word. I am using it with Word 2010 with no problems so far for my own studies,

Thanks for that Ian. Am looking into it. Great to have other options and resources to pass along to students. (Also great if I can avoid the nightmare of referencing not working as I work!)

Hi Imogen

Had looked at this but looked again following your post. Tried the suggestion from the very last post on page 2:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2007-word/cant-insert-a-citation-and-source-in-office-word/3e432f7c-0f53-4a5a-8c02-b77cdd0b5403?page=2

“I had the same problem in Word 2010 and found it was related to file trust settings.  File, Options, Trust Center, Trust Center Setting, File Block Settings, Web Pages had to be unselected, meaning not block.  This setting also stopped the Mail Merge feature from working.”

It works!!! I do find it rather strange though that it has been necessary to unblock trust centre settings.

Thanks

Morning

Thanks to all for your help.

Update and possible solution

Revisited the site: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/office/forum/office_2007-word/cant-insert-a-citation-and-source-in-office-word/3e432f7c-0f53-4a5a-8c02-b77cdd0b5403?page=2 (Thanks Imogen)

Found this post from another person on 2nd page:

I had the same problem in Word 2010 and found it was related to file trust settings.  File, Options, Trust Center, Trust Center Setting, File Block Settings, Web Pages had to be unselected, meaning not block.  This setting had also stopped the Mail Merge feature from working.

I applied these settings and eureka! The Citation and Bibliography feature seems to work again.

Word of caution: Not entirely happy to be changing default settings in Trust Centre. If anyone else uses this method, please be sure and do so at your own risk!

Reckon that this problem has not gone away and  will keep an eye out on updates.

Regards

Vivienne

Hi Vivienne
Thats great, google scholar also allows you copy and paste links to articles in to the bibliography manager too
although I am also thinking that manual checking is best like when using spell checker.
