I was given a Google Chromebook just before Christmas and passed it on to a 5th year student to try out. I asked him back in January to write a review of it to give me feedback on his experience on using it in class and for homework. He recently updated it a bit (stuff in brackets) to reflect updates from Google. His review is here ....

The following link is to a review by The Verge on the new Chromebook and Chromebox
The OS has been updated on existing hardware so existing Chromebooks have the same look and feel as the new ones described in the Verge article.

Thanks for sharing this, John - great to get feedback from a pupil like this. He should get into writing reviews, certainly does it well!

A few of my students used the Chromebook over holidays / weekends etc and were well impressed also. Portablility, simplicity and the outstanding battery life were the main advantages, according to them. But the need for always-on, fast internet access is a drawback, not sure if we're ready for that yet.

The latest update to V.19 (today) gives the Chromebook a "Desktop" a Windows-like taskbar and re-sizable windows - this more familiar look may make it more appealing to new users.

It would be great to see them adopted in Irish schools, but 2 things need to happen first: 100MB/s broadband & a drop in cost.

Hi John

As with Pádraig, congrats to the student involved.  The review was extremely clear and it's great to get a student view.  Thanks for sharing.
