Hi Folks,
If you find yourself trying to write documents in Microsoft Word for your students on scientific subjects you may find yourself using the equation editor, and getting frustrated by the interface.
A minor shortcut is to know that if you type:
x^2 +2xy +y^2
directly into the equation window in your document, it will put all the superscripts where you want them to be.
Best

Also works in the equation editor in LibreOffice and Google Docs (yes there's an equation editor in Google Docs - demo here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VSayDc7iexA )

If you type a lot of these then using the shortcuts as Laurence suggests is a lot faster - full list of the Google Docs shortcuts here http://www.notuom.com/google-docs-equation-shortcuts.html and I wouldn't be too surprised if many of those work the same in Word etc.

Also EquatIO, texthelp.com/equatio , is a great alternative to built-in equation editors. It has a variety of input methods including speech input, handwriting recognition on tablets/touch devices, recognition from images, prediction, and the typical shortcuts.
Works in Word, Google Docs, Google Forms, Google Slides, Google Drawings, and a collaborative area called EquatIO mathspace (equat.io).
Also great for science with over 1000 chemical compounds in prediction.

They even have resources for remote learning: https://www.texthelp.com/en-gb/sectors/education/remote-learning/

Caveat: I helped build EquatIO, but no longer work for Texthelp. As a maths teacher for 15 years it was the equation editor that I always wished my students had so we built it!
