Hi everyone.

And advice or experiences with the following would be greatly appreciated.

Our school is considering requesting that incoming first years purchase a chromebook for use at home and in school.

(We already have a chromebook culture in the school as there are class sets that teachers book.We are a Google/ G-Suite school)

Our WiFi infrastructure has been strengthened in recent years and there is a student WiFi network which our 900 + students use on a BYOD basis (we have a policy re phone use).

We envision the chromebooks as companion devices which are used occasionally during the school day and at home, but not for ebooks. (Too many issues with ebooks, it seems, based on talking to other schools)

Staff are concerned though about students damaging or losing their chromebooks during the school day, on the school bus, etc.

Any advice re protective covers for chromebooks?

Any advice re management software?

Any advice re ensuring they don’t go missing? As far as we know, management software can enable the device to be remotely disabled but not traced / tracked.

Thanks very much in advance for any assistance or experience with this.

Hi Michael,

We are currently running one to one devices with first and second years. (Approx 400 devices) We have put a package together to include the device, management software, ebooks etc.

If you want to send me a direct email I can give you all the details.

My thoughts would be that you need to make the Chromebook a value added resource and embed it into teaching/learning so that a broken CB is not an option. That way kids are more likely to treat them with respect and not sit on them. Deffo some CBs are more rugged than others so worth looking into options there and price differential. False economy for the parents if the cheapo CB only lasts until Christmas!

Good advice, thanks Greg.

While not going down an ebook route, we would be (and do already) incorporating digital aspects (google docs, slides, sites, etc) into many subjects in first year.

The difference is that they'd be doing this on their own chromebook as opposed to in the computer room, or with a set the teacher has booked, or on their phone.

I take your point though about making the devices as meaningful/integral as possible to ensure that they are valued by the students.

Thanks again.

Hi Michael,

As an educator. I think it's a great idea and very positive towards ensuring students have 21st-century ICT skills and that this environment becomes second nature. They are now all digital citizens. I see so many secondary students that have no real understanding of basic ICT skills. The primary sector is really getting into the Chromebook world, which is fantastic as it allows us to aid schools' delivery coding, whilst again enhancing the student's ICT skills, so many students arrive into post-primary first year and have never used a keyboard. I haven't heard of or come across anything like what you are suggesting in the secondary sector (The take-home bring-to-school option).

As a parent of a 16 and 17-year-old. Yes, I would have to agree with "Staff are concerned though about students damaging or losing their Chromebooks during the school day, on the school bus, etc." Costly to replace and may give students an excuse not to have their work done. Saying this I still think if the logistics are right it should only enhance the student's learning experience.

Rgds,
Trevor

Hi,

Interested in the discussion on this thread. Michael can I ask your school - are students allowed use their own phones, what is the policy on this in your school? We have 800+ students and 90 Chromebooks, they are not allowed to use phones.

thanks

Hi Michael and all,

Would I be correct that all Chromebooks with the letters EE in their product name are Education Editions and therefore ruggedised to a degree, thus hopefully reducing the level of potential damage?  And if so could it be specified that pupils by an EE model only...?

Hi all…

Just a quick note - if you are attending the CESI Conference - myself and Hassan will be in the Maker Area with many things…

Including how to turn old devices (laptops/desktops) into Chrome devices. This past Monday I took 6 laptops, installed SSD drives with Chrome OS Flex on them and now they are like new machines.

Some had only 2GB of RAM and that was sufficient even!

Feel free to call into the Maker Area of CESI and try some hands on machines!

Cheers,

Chris

Hi Paul,

I'm not sure about the EE query, this could be specific to certain manufacturers, I don't really know.

In any case it might be worth considering having the students purchase the Chromebooks either from the school directly or from a partnered supplier. My company ran a similar scheme with a further education school and it was very successful. The main benefit being that the school can specify the model, and can also negotiate the price based on bulk quantity - certainly cheaper than buying off the high street.

When we ran this scheme before, the school gave two options for Chromebooks (low v mid-range) and we took orders directly from the students a few weeks in advance. We were also able to negotiate directly with Asus and secured free laptop bags and wireless mouse with each purchase.

Kind regards
Sean

Thanks for the reply Trevor.

Yes, we view it as allowing them to be digital citizens by incentivising them to have a companion learning device that is not their phone.

The take-home-bring -to-school concept is a concern. However, if we can build a culture around it and use protective covers it could work. We will test it and if it doesn't work at least they'll have the devices at home for work that we assign them via google classroom.

Hi Michael,
We have chromebooks for all our 6th class students, they bring them home and back in as necessary. We have had no real issues with breakages(3 in 4 years) out of over 200 students. The chromebooks are very robust , we don't use protective covers. We use them in a similar way that you are thinking, we don't have ebooks on them, we incorporate google tools into most lessons. If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to ask.
Regards,
Mark

Hi Louise.

We have a similar context to yee in terms of student numbers and chromebooks that staff can book.

We put a BYOD/AUP policy (we created a simple one that's displayed in all rooms. Email me if you want to see it) in place following the return to school after covid to keep the digital momentum going. It works fairly well although some staff felt that phones became too visible around the school after it was first put in place. It was 'tightened up on' after that.

To be honest, it's 50/50 in terms of what staff use on a day to day basis (i.e. whether they allow students to use their phones or whether they book chromebooks for their room). The chromebooks work best for any kind of lengthy work online. The phones are used for brief, convenient access to google classroom, kahoot, online research. Phones aren't ideal though. Too many distractions.

We see gradually phasing in student owned chromebooks as a way of phasing out phone use.

Hi Paul.

Yes, the asus and lenovo chromebooks that we have in school here already are EE editions.

We are just wondering if an 'otterbox' type cover could be bulk bought for the chromebooks if students were bringing their own devices to and from school.

I see them on Amazon. Presume that I.T. suppliers in Ireland stick them as well.

Hi Louise,

Sure - the process is [relatively] straightforward.

This will give you some guidance. I highly recommend swapping any old rotational hard drives out for SSDs - this will make a huge difference.

A 128GB SSD can be got for around €50 (or cheaper) these days.

Feel free to reach out if parts are confusing or you have a question. My details are below.

Cheers!

Hi Louise
What Chris said about converting older; not fit for purpose PC's or notebooks to Chrome is very much worthwhile, I have been doing this for a number of years now,  started with Linux
, neverware and now that more schools have started to use Chromebooks to Chrome Flex, it is a fairly straight forward process and if any school wants advice or help in this then please email or call.

Hi Val,

I’d love to be pointed towards an explainer document/ video to try this out. I have a lot of old laptops that are out of date but I’m loathe to dump or part with because they’d be perfect for this.

Thanks
