Hi Shane

This seems to be a specific type of IWB rather than the ones that we have in our own classrooms. Mimio have a large range of products and it's good to see one that is aimed at inclusive learning experiences.

Regards

Simon

Thanks for this Shane. DO you have any leads for information about building assistive technolgy into specifications for major IT projects? i.e - Equality Impact Assessment of major projects, and the type of specifications that might be included when deciding what software to include in a system for a large education organisation?

Hi Simon

While the examples are based on the Mimio product, the author does point out that "Whenever I demonstrate or talk about the Mimio Xi, I always make sure that people realise that many of the inclusive features, e.g. simultaneous display on a laptop and instant printouts of content, are also available when using other brands of interactive whiteboard that they may have in their institution."

It's the general principal of how with a little bit of planning and innovation, whiteboards can support students with disabilities that I wanted to highlight. Hope this helps.

Hi Angela

I have good news and bad news!

The bad news is that in my experience, assistive technology is very personal and related to individual needs. I don't think it would be possible to specify your assistive technology needs in advance.

The good news is that you can and should specify your accessibility needs in advance, particularly when tendering for software. The NDA's IT Procurement Toolkit will help you to ensure that the goods or services you procure will be accessible to the widest possible audience - see http://universaldesign.ie/useandapply/ict/itprocurementtoolkit

The 'Web Technologies' section of the toolkit includes standard texts that you can cut/paste into your tender document to ensure that any web services you procure comply with the WAI WCAG 2.0 guidelines for web accessibility.

Hope this helps, and feel free to repost with further queries.

Shane
