Hi,

Can I ask about accessing YouTube in schools particularly primary schools - We've recently changed our Split Level Filtering to Level 4 to allow teachers to access YouTube however the change has meant that currently all devices in the building including pupils can access the site. Our engineer has told me that additional work can be carried on the router to only allow access for teachers. Is this something most schools do?

Thanks,

Fiona

I don't understand how the entire school now has Level 4.

my understanding of split level and the way I've deployed it in the past is ....... its "opt in" rather than "opt out", what I mean by that is, the entire school is Level three except the teacher PCs which a static IP address set on them.

This is the msg I got back from the school broadband people, I found them very helpful.

"split level,  L5 is on the 6 IP's below, You will need to assign this IP's to the machines you want L5 on with the DNS you get from us."

Your I.T. guy or a confident teacher should be able to apply this to the classroom PCs.

I couldn't be sure but it sounds like you're I.T. guy is putting the dns settings on a router to give a GROUP of PCs access, this can be done but to be honest its easier to go around to each of the devices .

Hi Hassan,

Thanks for your reply. The engineer told me it's because we have a Windows Server + Router and something to do with the firewall???? Didn't understand fully. He told
me that School's Broadband would need to do further work remotely on the router in order for all pupil devices to be on a different
Level not allowing them YouTube access. I'm just wondering is this true and would it require much work do you think? It has taken us a long time to get split level filtering setup in the school. There had been some issue on the network preventing it from working which has only been resolved today after 2 separate support companies have spent many hours trying  to resolve it for us.

Thanks,

Fiona

Hi Fiona

As it stands, HEANET provides the internet through a large router by the brand 'Juniper Networks' - if you plug a device into this, it will receive internet access on the higher filter level (In your case Level 3)
As Hassan mentioned you 'opt in' to the split-level filtering (Again in your case Level 4) by changing the IP Address on the devices you want to access on for the likes of YouTube

If your devices have an IP address similar to 87.35.XX.XXX then it's a simple matter of changing the IP address on the devices you want to have Level 4 filtering

However, my guess would be that the router your engineer is referring to, is a school bought piece of equipment.
This means the router takes a single IP address from the Juniper box (or router) and provides the devices connected to the School box with an alternative IP address

Below is my guess as to how your school's network is currently setup (sample IP address numbers)

          Juniper                    School                    Student                  Teacher
          Router       -->         Router       -->          Device       -->        Device
        87.35.64.1             10.20.30.1               10.20.28.1              10.20.29.1

HEANET will apply Level 3 filtering on everything bare the designated IP address, so they could say:
Level 3 on 87.35.64.2 to 87.35.64.200                 Meaning 199 Devices would have Level 3 filtering
Level 4 on 87.35.65.201 to 87.35.64.211             Meaning 10   Devices would have Level 4 filtering

As both your Student Devices and Teacher Devices are after the School Router they cannot be changed to the HEANET addresses provided
So if the school does have a piece of equipment that was either purchased and installed by the school itself or by a third party contractor - then the answer more than likely would be, either everyone has access to YouTube or no one would have access to YouTube
If this is the case then yes it can be quite awkward trying resolve and in some cases it can be very expensive also

Hope this explains things a little better & I hope it's a simple fix of changing an IP address as I know how difficult split filtering approval can be!!
