Hi all,

Looking for some help. I have a student who sent an 'naughty email' from a school address while logged on from home. If I have the ip address is there any way to track it to a physical address?

Thanks

A whole can of worms there I think. I would instead think of who has access to that email address and start eliminating from there.

To locate the physical address I think you would need to ask the broadband provider involved who they had assigned that ip address to at the time. Obvious privacy issues there where they aren't just going to hand that over on request so I'd say you would be engaging in a lot of time, hassle and money for legal folk to get that information.

In my school if an inappropriate email is sent then the account is suspended and the onus is on the student involved to take responsibility for any misuse. Mostly it is one student playing a trick on another without thinking of the consequences. Suspending the account raises the stakes a bit giving immediate inconvenient consequences and highlights that the school won't ignore misuse. Even if you never find the actual culprit, being seen to not ignore such instances encourages students to take better care of their username and password and also discourages misuse. We re-enable the account and change the password once we are satisfied the student is going to take better care of things in future or if they were the wally who sent the email, show they clearly understand that such misuse is not acceptable.

I’m with John on this one, getting the location of a public IP address although can be done is not worth the red-tape that you would have get through. (there’s nothing stopping you tell the students it can be done)

Kill the account temperarly and take things from there.

First off, login and change passwords right away, password protect all school email accounts, never give students access , if they must have email from the school account then create separate student accounts,

To help further we would need more information on what email client/app you are using

Does your students have full access to your school account via webmail, outlook or some other client

But at this stage it is too probably too late to do anything but apologise to whoever it was sent

Sage advice from both J Pettey and J Hegarty.

I would advise the mail would need to be quite extreme (solicitors and lawsuit territory) to attempt to track down the physical address.

Regardless - if an email is sent from a student address - ultimately they are responsible. Even if they didn’t send it themselves - the same as we all are.

Tracking the physical address (I presume you mean the UID/UUID/MAC address) would be extremely difficult. (not to mention a MAC address isn’t terribly hard to spoof)

As John H has said, the IP address will be the broadband providers address (Public IP) but this will then go to the internal IP - which is almost impossible to find out the actual machine - unless you have access to that person’s router/managed switch/modem… and even then, you’re into an arena of logs/time stamps/cross-referencing, etc… all very difficult and almost certainly not worth it - depending on the situation of course.

Many thanks,
Chris Reina

From my experience,
A qualified no.
you can try the tools on this page, which is worth reading to get some idea of the problems with this approach.
your mileage may vary, but when I input my current ip address while siting in the staff room in Bray overlooking bray head and the Irish Sea, it told me I was by majority vote in Dublin, with a minority opinion that I was in Clonshaugh.

If the issue is really serious, you can probably identify the internet service provider, and see if they can add clarity to the matter.
Best regards
