Hi, I was wondering if there was someone in my area who could visit our primary school and give us independent advice? We began inviting companies in the cork area to give a quote for Wi-Fi system as part of putting infrastructure in place with DES grant. However, each technician has given different advice. One suggested that we should rewire as the wiring is cat 5 and the 2 switch boxes are messy. Another suggested that we hire a tester for 250 Euro and he would test wires first and when this is done he would give us a quote for unifi system.
Any help appreciated.

Hi Catherine. I'm about 25 mins from you. Testing wires plus Unifi sounds about right. I am just doing an installation in the Tracton Arts and Community Centre in Minane Bridge (which is sort of like a small national school). Equipment cost for that excluding labour is about 700 euros plus the cabling. I'll have a quote on the cabling next week and let you know how that comes in (3 access points). I would definitely recommend the electrician who works on their cabling, he is fab and knows his stuff. I don't really see that it would cost 250 to hire the tester though... but others may have advice for you there. I think Chris Reina's also in your area.

Best wishes

Following up on Catherine's question:

Is there any benefit to placing two unifi boxes in a school hall in a primary/secondary school fit out?

i.e.: a room that could have a lot of devices connecting at the same time in future years (such as a byod event)

Hi Catherine.

If the cabling is just Cat5 then you would really need to get the system
upgraded as it can only handle up to 100 Mbps speeds, but depending on when
the installation was put in it might be CAT5E, get someone to look at the
cabling or check it yourself, have a look at one of the connected cables in
the cabinet, ( not the patch leads) all cabling is stamped every meter and
should state manufacturers name then something like U/UTP CAT5 or CAT5E, if
says CAT5E then it most likely will suffice as it can it can handle 1000
Mbps speeds (gigabit Ethernet)

Messy cabling in the cabinets is easily tidied up, also look at the network
switches if it says something like 10/100 then change these but they might
be Gigabit take a few pictures and post here of the front of the switches.

Feel free to phone me anytime no charge for chatting and we can advise you
before you decide, but being in Dublin a bit too far away to really help
although I am regularly in Limerick and Cappamore and Pallas

Hi Catherine,

I would concur with Imogen. The cables should be tested - ideally CAT6, but CAT5 are fine.

Depending on the size of the school, capacity, etc. CAT6 can be costly. We should look at the switches to ensure they are OK. (Gigabit required)

To complicate matters - there is an in-between standard called CAT5e - most places would be CAT5e. To simplify: CAT5 = 10/100 • CAT5e = 10/100/1000 (gigabit)

UniFi is the way to go definitely. If you have a local electrician, they should be able to test the cables for you - if not, I would be happy to do that.

I have no problem in calling to you to do a site survey - FOC. I’m about an hour away from you - based in Killarney.

If you have building plans for the school and would like to email those to me, I can do out a rough idea of what you’ll need to spend.

———————

Eoin - in answer to your query… there is no benefit from having 2 separate APs in a school hall. (Depending on the setup) — UniFi is a “load-balancing” system.

eg: you have 4 APs around the building. On a day where the hall is filled to capacity (and everyone has the password - which they shouldn’t!) - that single AP in the hall will distribute requests around to the other 3 APs and “balance” the load. Another way to manage this is have different networks - eg: Teachers; Students; Guest - and restrict speed on the Guest and perhaps the Student - then give the presenters the Teachers password and they will get full speed while people checking Facebook won’t!

Hope that helps!

Many thanks,
Chris Reina

Load balancing does require that APs overlap so physical proximity and nature of walls etc does become a factor.

When planning for wiring it is always more cost effective to install additional data outlets even if initially not used. The cost of cable is low compared to the cost of labour to pull it.

CAT6 should be the mimimum spec for new jobs - although CAT6A is the DES min spec for new builds. CAT6A is brute to work with as it is more rigid and larger diameter.

Patch panels in cabinets need to meet the spec of the cable - ie don't terminate CAT6 on a CAT5 panel. In reality it will probably not make a difference unless you are operating at threshold levels (eg max distance or bandwidth).

Another consideration is to place all wireless devices and traffic on a separate VLAN to the wired network - especially in a BYOD (or potentially) environment. This requires "managed" switches but these needn't break the bank!

Hi Catherine the quote came in to cable to a poE switch and then to 3 APs, none of which is more than 25m from the router.

190 materials, 360 labour plus VAT =  624.

Not cheap but there's no option to use trunking etc in this building - it has to look nice, so suspended ceilings must come down for the installation in one part and a 2 ft thick stone wall needs drilling to get cable into the original 1840s National School building, plus cable must be pulled up a long duct to the theatre/hall. I think it's fair for the job in hand. Contact me off list if you want his name. The cable is Cat5e and we're not going to upgrade at this stage until we see what how usage is, particularly as the broadband connection is only 40 Mb and may not improve in the next 5 years.

Best wishes - hope that helps. Obviously you will need to get quotes for your situation, but I think one of the useful things about the CESI list is the opportunity to compare ball parks regarding equipment/funding!
