Has anyone found a solution for this?

I have a teacher who has (~30) old DVD that he shows classes. He would like to switch to a Chromebook for teaching.

----
Is it possible to plug an external dvd drive into a Chromebook to play dvds? Or is there an easier way of doing this?

----
I found videos on YouTube of people who had done this so I plugged an external dvd drive into a 2016 acer r11 to try this.

I downloaded the VLC  android app and also tried the VLC chrome extension - unfortunately I could get neither working with it.

-----
I'm convinced someone in the CESI community has a solution!

Best wishes
Eoin

You will need to rip the DVD to mp4 and then you can play via USB stick

Handbrake (with possible addition of libdvdcss dll) is a free DVD ripper, similar to VLC but is a dedicated ripper.

I am ripping ToKillAMockingBird as we speak - full report later...

Hi Eoin,

Hope all is good…

I totally second Greg’s suggestion - I use Handbrake all the time… even for taking videos shot on iPads/Phones/etc and reducing file size… it’s a remarkable tool.

As well at that - free! (I’d love to pay them)

Available for Mac, Windows and Ubuntu…

Can’t go wrong.

Many thanks,
Chris Reina

My ripping exploits worked and the mp4 plays just fine.

Assuming it is an unencrypted DVD: Since the external DVD can be read as a mass storage device I'd just use youtube to convert to mp4. upload from the VIDEO_TS the VTS*.VOB files. Use the Video-editor to append them to each other. If you want you can download as mp4 and play from stick or gdrive or whatever..

One risk is that the disk may contain copyrighted audio or video that may be recognized.

One advantage is that it will be backed up.
Another advantage is that he can do it himself with 1 external reader or from home and without needing other hardware/software.

I hardly ever transcode myself, almost always let youtube do it.

Its 6 or one half-dozen of the other - the key thing is that it is possible.

I don't even use a USB, we have unlimited storage on G Suite after all so let your DVDs follow you around! Make sure you buy a copy to keep it legit.

You just need one 'ripper' drive or PC.

Hi Con,
For clarity - if you own an original video (dvd)  and the purpose is to show in the classroom, it is OK to keep a copy in Gsuite/the cloud/USB?

Best wishes,
Eoin

I am not an expert in Irish law, but it is legal to keep a copy of DVDs for backup/own use purposes. So, as long as you do not share the file it is probably OK.

It may be becoming less and less relevant. Most teachers nowadays simply ask a pupil to sign in with their Netflix, Google-video or Amazon-prime video and display that.
From "clean-desk" to "clean drive". :-). Looks better should someone want to audit the school too.
