Hi all

Has a (free) cybersecurity course for Irish teachers emerged yet that people would recommend?

Thanks

Hi John,
I hope all is well. We have a CoP for the co-development of a course. If you’re interested I can talk you through it.

Kind regards.

Not a course, but my team (we organise ZeroDays CTF and the Cyber-Schools CTF) are currently working on a resource website introducing students and teachers to gamefied cybersecurity learning through Capture-The-Flag challenges. We hope this will be of interest for TY short courses, Leaving Cert CompSci and Coder Dojo leaders, and will include a members area for teachers, with extra resources and challenges (and solutions) for use in the classroom. All free. And launching soon! Here's us on Nationwide earlier this year, to give a gist of what we do...

Hi John,

I’d also like to highlight that Oide TiE have developed a number of new guidance documents and supports specifically for schools.

The overall purpose of cybersecurity for schools is to protect the school’s digital infrastructure and data so that the range of school data being used across the school is not lost, stolen, or compromised.

Having a cybersecurity policy in place enables schools to review their situation across relevant areas, ranging from who has access to critical data, to network security, to backups, incident response, and cybersecurity awareness training. A well implemented school cybersecurity policy ensures each critical area is addressed consistently. By addressing areas such as ‘how to respond to an incident’, software updates, protection of computing devices, and training, all within one policy, schools can better prepare, manage, and recover from cyber incidents or a data breach. The policy clarifies the different roles & responsibilities. This type of clarity is vital during ‘incidents’, so that all parties are aware of their role and responsibilities.

The most important new document is a ‘School Cybersecurity Policy Template’ document which schools can use, along with the other resources, FAQ’ etc, to develop their own school cybersecurity policy in the following areas.

  • Controlling access to key systems and data
  • School network/WiFi security, other systems
  • Software and application security updates
  • Protecting computing devices
  • Data backups and recovery
  • Incident response and recovery
  • Cybersecurity awareness and training

Best Regards

Tom

Thanks Tom et al.

My target audience is FET/OSD staff to access an additional resource in addition to what cybersecurity course my ETB will roll out. I pretty much had the Oide list and Cybersafety.ie already, so I will have to look at the cyberwise one again. the Thanks for sharing as I guess many others might not be aware of them on this list.

John
