Problems connecting Apple TV to Smartboard

Just wondering if anyone can help me with this issue - Can’t connect a new Apple Box to a Smartboard in the classroom. All cables appear to be connected correctly but no picture coming up on screen. Works perfect with a TV. Any suggested solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Check the inputs on the smart board making sure the input the matched the where the Apple TV is connected.
If you’re than likely using HDMI then make sure that input is selected in the board .

Hi Fiona,

Are you connecting directly via HDMI > HDMI or are you using a HDMI > VGA adaptor?

Thanks everyone for your response. Apologies for late reply but I haven’t been in school for past week so only getting back to this now. 

We are connecting using a HDMI to VGA adapter:

In our experience the VGA to HDMi to a screen casting device doesn’t work. We upgraded to HDMi connections.

I can depend on the adapter. Some may not have HDCP technology. KanexPro is a reliable model.

make sure the connector you are using is a HDMI > VGA rather the other way around, that one caught me out.

Hi Fiona,

I’ve seen this issue before - you will need to get a different VGA to HDMI adaptor… preferably a powered one. (USB or mains)

Your issue is the new Apple TVs require more power and can’t use the old connectors.

Kanex make a range or you could search one on Amazon.




Kate… just saw your response there… I believe your issue would be more associated with your WiFi network - sending video (and audio) across Wifi is a huge ask. Your network will need to support this.

(Note that many Cisco networks need “tweaking” for this to work… also, if it’s a situation where you have “little boxes” in each room (Netgear, TPLink, etc. - it’s quite likely your network is not supportive of this technology)

However - there is an alternative…

Which is to use AirServer.

IMHO, the new Apple TVs are fantastic, but too pricey for Educational usage. 

AirServer offers EDU licenses from €7-€11 per device. Much cheaper than €200 per room!

Note that this is a software solution which is installed on the teachers laptop or desktop - you mirror your iPad to that device which then projects to the whiteboard.

Again - your Wifi network needs to be fit for purpose.

I have had very mixed success with HDMI to VGA adapters. I have found different adapters work with different laptops with different projectors with unpredictable reliability.

Everything worked once we went to HDMi so we were delighted to be up and running. 

Good to know about the powered adapters for future reference. :)
