Hi all

Best of luck to everyone starting 2023--24.

My Day 1 of school is today and have arrived  to an unwelcome surprise. We moved our Irish scheme to Bua na Cainte only to learn today that they don't work on Chromebooks.

I've spent the last 3 years trying to convince my staff to move to Chromebooks and have had some good success. Surely EDCO can't be still stuck in the dark ages with this? Has anyone found a workaround before I have to dole out a few thousand euro on Windows laptops?

Surely you can just log into their website instead of using their APP?

Hi Simon,

This is very frustrating. The Bua na Cainte digital resources from JI - 5th class can only be downloaded to a PC or Mac:

image

https://buanacainte.ie/school-download/

6th class resources are available online with a given login. I don’t understand why all year level resources are not available online.

image

Another frustrating thing is you can only access the app via the PC/MAC you have downloaded it to with an assigned login provided by EDCO that is unique to each teacher so in our case if a teacher is unexpectedly absent and has their laptop at home, a sub teacher cannot access the app on another device.

I would love to know too if anyone has found a workaround.

Thanks, Fiona. I've been asking around and there doesn't seem to be a solution. It's so frustrating in this day and age. It means that it won't work on iPads either. I rang EDCO and got nowhere. I've also emailed so we'll see what happens. I also contacted Google because I thought we might have a workaround with something like WineHQ but it doesn't work on managed devices. I've spent the last few years trying to convince staff to move to ChromeOS and this has scuppered the entire thing. Just when Jolly Phonics copped on and went web-based too!

Just a suggestion, but could you scan the book and workbook. Save it as a pdf and upload it that way.

I would buy a book and break it into pages and feed it through a scanner/colour copier and email it to yourself.  Then upload it.

Would that have legal implications?

Regards,
Michelle

Once upon a time you could download and install to a shared drive, e.g. Sharepoint or Google Drive, and run from there.  Not sure if this is still possible with Teams or current Google drive.

Thanks for this. In this case these are flash-based interactive resources so I imagine they simply haven't gotten rid of the Flash resources and updated them to HTML5

These are additional interactive resources. If it were just the book, it would be grand. I'm amazed that a modern scheme has this issue.

Reply from Edco on 17 Jan this year.
Quite annoying for those of use who are in the Chrome OS environment.

Hi Mark,

Apologies, but at the moment, Bua na Cainte A-5 is only available for Windows and Mac computers, and currently, its development is not in progress for Chromebooks or other platforms.

As the Bua na Cainte 6 programme is available online, at the https://edco.ie/bua6 website, it can be opened from Chromebooks too.

Kind regards,

Edco Support

It’s very frustrating. I feel your pain Simon. I’ve thought about moving to iPads or Chromebooks and you can only move as fast as the slowest providers out there. I’m sure others on here are also sick of having to phone Edco every time you have staff moving rooms or changing PCs just to release relevant licences so you can sign into BnaC again. It’s a fab resource but come on Edco!! Anyone for a petition?

Ah just had a look, this is EDCO, have you contacted them, apologies if you mentioned you had already. (E-mail: sa...@Edco.ie)

On the Chrome books can you access any other browser?

If you have purchased licences surely they can provide you with a CD that you could install on your network?

There's more than one way to skin a cat so keep at them else threaten cancelling the schools subscription?

Problem with the cancel subscription fix is we paid for perpetual licence. They really should move with the times.

Hi Simon, et. al…

I highlighted this with Edco tech support about 3-4 years ago.

Flash has been deprecated since 2017 and officially gone since 2020.

Edco have no excuse now, they’ve had 6 years to fix this. However, I do understand it costs lots of time, resources and money - but they will lose customers (and I suspect already are) if they don’t update.

I’m not a wizard, but I have converted some [simple] things from Flash to HTML5 with success. I don’t know the ins-and-outs of Bua na Cainte, but would be willing to give it a go.

All I should need is a login (which I understand is complicated enough) to have a look at the books and resources.

If someone can share - drop me an email - or, I’ll be at DublinMaker this weekend if you’d like to chat in person.

Cheers,

Chris

Hi all,

Certainly not ideal, especially this time of year. My initial thoughts would have been wine too.

While these are not at all ideal, two possible solutions I can think of are Chrome remote desktop or a Microsoft cloud pc subscription.

If you had a windows device in the school, you could possibly install the bua na cainte apps and use Google Remote Desktop. May cause difficulty timetabling access to the computer.

I havnt used it my self but another possible solution is Microsoft 365 Cloud PC, I believe it can be used on the chrome books. However the subscription costs may not make it a solution.

I hope this helps,

Thanks for all the replies, folks. I've looked into all the hacks but they only seem to work on individual devices rather than a managed set up. We looked into setting up a virtual server but then we had a moment where we just thought - why are we going to so much effort and spending more money for something that simply shouldn't be the case anymore?

We'll definitely be leaving EDCO at the first opportunity. They are now the only company, as far as I know with this issue. We feel quite stupid for not checking into this before committing to the programme. I guess we have to live and learn before spending thousands of euro on a programme. As Chris says, they don't seem to have any interest in fixing the problem.

Thanks again for all the advice. I'm all for a petition so if anyone wants to set it up, I'll happily sign!

Hi folks

Had a call with someone in EDCO today who has apologised for the slow update on their digital resources. They are working on it but it looks like it will be a few years before it will be fully online. They hope you have 4th and 5th class online by 2024-25

Hi Fiona

I've spoken to EDCO a couple of times about this and they've assured me that they'll be going fully online over the next number of years.

Fingers crossed

Bua na Cainte A and B are now available online and have been updated from the previous version. This has been out since September. You'd imagine they will add at least 1/2 more this year.
