Hi Chris,
Yes could do one by one,
what I am ideally looking for is
“one formula to rule them all”

Could you use the function "substitute"?

 Hi Eoin

It will be more difficult with the fada, but open your spreadsheet and from the home windows click find and select, then click replace, windows
Find What
Replace With
find á
replace with a

Do this for every letter that has a fada

Hi Eoin,

Do you have many spreadsheets?

If you have loads, you could always copy and paste each sheet into one large one. (Which you’d need for import in any case…)

Or - I may have not made myself clear…

All Spreadsheet applications have the ability to “Find and Replace”

You can simply select the letter (or strange character where the fada should be) copy it - then paste into “Find and Replace”

Then replace with the standard letter.

find and replace (á) and replace with (a)
find and replace (ó) and replace with (o)
etc
etc
etc

Ctrl + F OR cmd + f will open the find button.

Hi Eoin, my experience would suggest you proceed carefully cos I’ve had difficulty with Gaelgoirí because I was not using the ‘fada’ out of convenience, or simplicity. It can grate and buy trouble, for what it’s worth🥴. - Denis

You will need a macro I think - formula alone would be more cumbersome. Here is a VB script that does it for ALL diacritics.
You could also add in hyphens depending on how you treat them.

Function StripAccent(thestring As String)
Dim A As String * 1
Dim B As String * 1
Dim i As Integer
Const AccChars= "áäčďéěíĺľňóôőöŕšťúůűüýřžÁÄČĎÉĚÍĹĽŇÓÔŐÖŔŠŤÚŮŰÜÝŘŽ"
Const RegChars= "aacdeeillnoooorstuuuuyrzAACDEEILLNOOOORSTUUUUYRZ"
For i = 1 To Len(AccChars)
A = Mid(AccChars, i, 1)
B = Mid(RegChars, i, 1)
thestring = Replace(thestring, A, B)
Next
StripAccent = thestring
End Function

Ahhh you’re on solid ground here Denis.

You can’t actually make an email address with fadaí(?) – I’ve tried.

Múinteoir Gaelscoile here.

However, you’re right - we do get a bit snotty if you drop them for no reason!

Tim.

Hi Eoin,

The 'Add-on' called PowerTools is great for that kind of thing. You can simplify selected text, including removing fadas, hyphens etc.

It's free for 30 days, so it's a nice thing to have in August when you might be uploading a lot of names. If you find it's useful, it may be worth the payment.
