A colleague in an ETB school was asking me what I knew about registration software such as E-Portal. Arguably, I know relatively little. I am aware of solutions such as golden lion and VS ware but I am told they all have their drawbacks. Can anyone suggest a good technology and suggest a company for support implementation? Or is it better to stick to pen and paper?
The school has both GAFE and Moodle. I assume neither of these offer registration tools?

Hi Keith

Not an expert in this field either, but as I understand whichever system is used must be able to synchronise with the DES's PPOD - Post Primary Online Database.  I have used both ePortal and VS Ware.  Both are relatively user-friendly for teachers marking rolls, exam results etc but both require siginificant competence in order to administer the school database.

VS Ware is a cloud based solution, while ePortal requires a dedicated server in the school.

Not sure this helps much!

Our schools use both, let me re-phrase that, two schools use Vsware and another uses eportal.
The VSware people Love it, they love the cross platform-ness of it and the user friendly-ness of it. Both schools asked Vsware to make changes to the software to suit their needs, and they did!!! Vsware are great like that they seem to be more about the outcome rather than the technology.
Eportal is a good management tool however they are FAR from cross platform.
Regarding GAFE, as long as you have the students details in CSV form you should have no issues importing/ exporting try to eliminate doing the same job twice, once you have all incoming first years in CSV form the rest should be seamless.
As you mentioned both have their ups and downs.
CMA time; the above is only my opinion if you want to know more you should speak to the schools, I can give you school names but I feel it's only fair if I do it offline.
