Anyone else seen this or bought it? It seems to be a paid app for accessing Scoilnet. Is this the official app does anyone know?

Seems to be one for imagebank too, not that that would be of much use!

If it is the official app, why is it not free. Surely we've already paid for this via our taxes. If its not official why are NCTE allowing their data to be used for commercial purposes?

Dean,
These are not official apps and have not been commissioned or endorsed/approved by PDST Technology in Education (formerly NCTE). With that in mind, I do not encourage any teacher to purchase this app. Scoilnet and associated sites like Imagebank have been developed for Irish teachers and are free.

The source of the app is being investigated.

I'd be interested in hearing from the person who made the app. Perhaps they might teach us how to make apps like this one for schools to do something similar (though I agree that this project is a bit cheeky! )

Simon, I agree! Would love to develop my own apps.

Sean, thanks but how is it not possible for you not to know??? Would the programmer not have had to have access to your data? Are you sure your systems are secure?

Hi,

Sorry for 'thread spoiling' and being off topic, also not trying to promote a commercial offering here!
Interesting comment on wanting to make your own apps. Simon did something like this a few years ago (at CESI conference I think).
My college has some excellent mobile app development courses aimed at programmers, but perhaps there is a market for teachers?
Would probably have to be a distance course? Do such courses exist in Ireland already?
I would be interested in all your views on this, and I can pass them on to my colleague.
Email me directly at stephen...@ittdublin.ie or at stephen....@gmail.com if you don't want to be a dirty thread spoiler like me!

If not feasible to run a whole course, perhaps the next CESI conference would give me some workshop space and we'll build some apps? :)

Regards,

Stephen

Hi Stephen

Count me in! I gave a short introduction to app development but there was no programming involved and it was very limited to what the web site allowed me to do. I'd love to be able to write proper apps but feel daunted by all that code!

Hi all,

Thanks, seems there is some interest!
We would expect a range of abilities, but in this case it could range from 'Don't know any programming' to 'Can program but want to learn apps'.
I will chat to our app development expert and see if we can pull something together aimed at complete beginner (App Inventor?), some coding (JavaScript/HTML5 apps) to advanced (in this case, our existing offerings are what you want!).
Might present some ideas for discussion at the CESIMeet before ICTEdu conference...

Hi Stephen,
I'd be interested in a distance-course on mobile app development
aimed at non-programmers!
Would be great if your colleague could offer something. On-line would
probably be best for most.

Hi all,

Android for non-programmers can be certainly challenging, basically
cause apps are written in Java, which would be a requirement to get
started with Android. Learning Java can take a while!

I've shared this App Inventor link before, but it could be easier to
tackle it as a group, instead of individually:
https://p2pu.org/en/groups/mit-app-inventor-explorer/

Not a substitute for a full course in app development (especially if
Android is not the only target), but can give you an idea of what's
like to write an app.

I'd be happy to help setting up some online sessions (G+ hangouts
would work) if there's any interest. All informal though... you can
get a couple of badges if you finish the challenge!

cheers,
José

I'd be really interested in doing this course.  I have no coding experience.

Hi,

I'm a programmer and Internet infrastructure expert. I spent the last year running the CoderDojo @ the Science Gallery and taught numerous secondary school kids basic coding. There are frameworks like http://phonegap.com that reduce the number of technologies needed to be learned. Further, turning basic HTML into a phone app can be done with http://jquerymobile.com/

Now, the time involved in learning to building a native (ios, android) app is equivalent to rebuilding a car engine. If you are already experienced writing programs and have an advanced use of a integrated development environment, a fair assessment of the time needed to learn to program apps is a single course. A course being 10 weeks with 18 - 30 hours per week course-work.

There are legions of people looking to help all of us learn how to become expert computer users.  I'm very interested in helping myself. What can we do to get started? How many would be willing to participate in-person once a week for a study group? How many who have expressed interest would be willing to pay for a course? Can we build apps in teams?

Seems there is a free version of the scoilnet app here (for windoes phones):

some very positive feedback from users too. Anyone got a winddows phone that can try this?
