Does anyone know of an easy to use software that would allow me to create a basic 3D model of our new school building. I am working with the children in the ASD unit and many of them are anxious about moving to the new school. We have started making visits to the building site to see the school building going up but I would love an easy way to create a 3D model where we could take a virtual tour from time to time to familiarise them with the main features of the building.

As an alternative suggestion - would they be able to make a tangible model
using card or lego or some other material?
The architect might even have one....

Sketch up is great- it used to be Google owned, but Trimble brought it recently. Here's the link for the download: http://www.sketchup.com/

Sketchup - free and cross platform. Formerly owned by Google but now owned by Trimble.

Download from here - http://www.sketchup.com/intl/en/download/index.html - use the free version - link on bottom right. Schools can get free licences for the pro version but the free version should do everything you want.

Hi Cormac,

I work with three 13 yr old boys in our ASD unit. We've building work going on the school so to familiarize ourselves with the changes the architect gave us a model and we recreated that using building blocks and Lego, we then had a treasure hunt around our 'new build' which involved the boys reading questions and finding the right answers through QR codes. Great fun! Happy boys!

Paula.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. We're attempting a Lego model but fast running out of Lego. Minecraft was another option but just had a look a sketch up and it looks like a good possibility. Contacting the architect is a great idea. Hopefully they will be able to help out too. Really looking forward to the move. :)

Hi Cormac
Try sweet home 3D. It is free and easier to use for modelling buildings than sketchup.
