I would be interested in getting involved in this Tony, but would like some more details.
What is entailed and would all classes be involved? Is it project based and what does the grant cover? All questions I know my principal will ask me!

Hi Tony,

I would be very interested in this too.  Same questions as Anne Marie really.  What commitment would be required on the part of the school, and what input would the school get for digital dinosaurs,  or even digital natives who might be willing to participate.  We would definitely come under the 'have done little or no work on coding before'.  We are a senior primary school, DEIS in Dublin.

The time frame for the project is to run from May to December 2018. One class from each school will participate, we'll train the participants and introduce them to physical computing using a number of devices (May to June). The schools will then be asked to try a particular device(s) with their class at the beginning of the following school year over a number of weeks (Sept to Nov) and give us feedback. 

The funding will go towards the purchasing of the devices your school might use. Participating schools will be asked to attend training and give us verbal and written feedback, with a possibility of some filming of the activities undertaken. We will be encouraging schools to think about how to use the devices in problem solving projects rather than setting tasks for their students where they follow a set of instructions.

As part of Phase 1 of the Coding in Primary Schools Initiative the NCCA has been working with 15 schools to find out what they’re doing with coding and how they are using it in the primary curriculum.

Phase 2 will involve working with more schools, in particular, schools which have done little or no work on coding before. These schools will try out hands-on, project-based approaches to teaching coding and computational thinking skills and will be offered ongoing professional development and support. There will also be opportunities to work with teachers in other schools to share ideas, experiences and suggestions for the future direction of coding and computational thinking in the primary school curriculum.

To support the work, each school will receive:

• a grant
  
• guidance and support from the NCCA through workshops, on-site visits and phone / email communication
  
• an invitation to an online collaborative space for training and shared resources
  
• substitute cover and travel expenses for the school’s nominee to attend meetings.
• This work will help NCCA to tease out and clarify how, to what extent, for what purpose, and where computational thinking and coding could be integrated in the primary curriculum. If you are interested in participating in Phase 2 of the initiative, please complete the short survey by April 20th.

Thanks for the extra info. Sounds really interesting. I’ve filled out the survey and applied so fingers crossed we’re successful. I’m in Special Ed this year so hope the fact I don’t have my own class won’t go against us. Time will tell. Thanks again & enjoy the Easter break.
