Hi all,

just wondering if any of you are using software, other than ePortal, for monitoring pupil attendance on a school-wide basis.

How useful is it?
Does it integrate with Facility Admin in any way? Or is it possible to import student database?
How user-friendly is it?

Thanks in advance

I don't have too much to add but I watched the sales-pitch with the
principal of one school recently and wasn't impressed, but we don't
feel we've much choice.

It does integrate with Admin.

User-friendly wise, there were many instances of the salesman showing
us a feature and having to click on the student's ID number beside
their name rather than just the name itself, which I found
ridiculous.

So I asked him how often updates come out. He said it hadn't been
updated in three years.

This is an application they tell you you need an expensive server for,
which you must maintain yourself. He was unaware of Active Directory
integration (which I now believe is available in England but not
here).

So when he started discussing the prices, I was shocked. They charge
per student per year. That is only acceptable for a cloud app with
regular updates.

We were quoted over €6000 per year. I calculated the server cost at
over €2000 after Windows Server and MS SQL licences were included. And
I wasn't looking forward to having to administer another server.

I'd be interested in building an alternative. I'd certainly commit a
few weekends to exploring the possibility with others.

On the topic of Facility Admin. Before I started working in this
school, the secretary would regularly have to call up Serco to unlock
the database (I think if the connection to the server was lost). They
would use LogMeIn to access her computer and edit a few database
fields. It took ages, was very frustrating. Next time it happened, I
spoke on the phone to the Serco guy and had him explain exactly what
he changed, then automated the process myself.

So, for anyone who wants it: http://www.zooofthenew.com/facilityadmin/unlockfacilityadmin.zip
Just edit UnlockFacilityAdmin.ini to suit your database location and
it should do the trick. The source is included in that .zip file.

Looking for an alternative ...... count me in.

My thoughts on this from a couple of years ago
http://jhegarty.blogspot.com/2009/02/student-management-system-better-way.html
- other than now being able to upload information little has changed
and the government recently signed a new 3 year contract with Serco
for the same version which is several versions behind their UK
offering.

There is a web based solution for Primary schools from an Irish
company http://www.aladdinschools.com/ that integrates in with Google
Apps. I'd love to see something like this for 2nd level.

One of the major hurdles for any competitor is getting recognised by
the Dept. of Ed., a process that can take years from what I'm told.

There is another UK based solution that is recognised by the Dept. and
is managed here by Dataset www.dataset.ie - but a quick trawl on the
web and they seem to have a similar reputation in the UK that facility
has here.

Hi,

Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I remember Moodle had a module or plug-in that allow the Teacher to run a full attendance per course or class.
As being part of the Moodle, once is properly configured and up & running...is "set it and forget it" .Has a familiar interface, does export/print to Excel for data management or archiving and is part of Moodle already .

With no relation to SAMI,I think they have a similar system as well ...

The truth is that eportal works fine and most of the users are well trained and used to the system.
Also ,I reckon that the most important fact is the system being recognised by the Department and approved by teachers.
Serco is here and I do not see how that can be changed, possible improvements over the time only if 'asked' by the competition.

I see as next step integrating some mobile devices for running over the air or some other combination "hardware - software" where students are automatically tracked/marked for present of absent status. That can go in to a SF scenario very well... :)

What we can do is getting some sort of cloud computing and sharing few schools databases in order to keep it cost effective BUT I reckon Serco does the installation or licensing per school and not by hardware. So, where is the cost effective rationale coming from !? Sharing hardware ? Sharing support ? Dunno...

Regards.

Hi all,

I just want to add to what Jh had to say;

"There is a web based solution for Primary schools from an Irish
company http://www.aladdinschools.com/ that integrates in with Google
Apps. I'd love to see something like this for 2nd level. "

Aladdin had a stand at the CESI meet this year and said they were
looking into a version for secondary schools. I would certainly be
interested in this. E-portal seems very expensive and quite bloated as
a system.

Trevor

Liam is correct
There is an attendance module that comes with moodle which can be exported to excel. In a previous school each tutor group had a course and we took attendance this way. It is very easy to use as you can mark all as present and then just uncheck the ones who are not present. In the UK this can interface with facility but sadly the version we have here does not allow it.
Was chatting to s'one over the midterm about using RFID cards as the input for facility attendance - now that is very exciting I think!

FYI: http://projectfedena.org/

I haven't looked into this in detail but it seems as far as I can tell to be a general management system including exams, rolls etc... its also SMS enabled. It is open source (which can be good or bad) but does seem to have had many revisions which is good. May be good as a reference.

Hi All,

I'm a bit late coming in in this but wanted to add something.

I recently gave a talk about Camara to the Google Technology Users
Group (a bunch of developers and interested parties that work with,
not for, Google technologies.

My request to the room at the end was that we try and get a number of
developers together to build a, at first basic, admin system that
would run off Apps which we could then offer free to Camara schools
that are adopting Google Apps for Education.

This idea could obviously be broadened out to be an open project
offered to all (secondary) schools.

I'd be happy to help coordinate, manage and offer some office space in
Dublin to anybody that is interested in getting this off the ground.

Hi,

Kenneth from Aladdin here. We have a solution at primary level that
does all this but is easier to use and less expensive than the UK
solutions. We are interested in providing a solution for secondary
schools and are currently piloting with a few secondary schools.

If there are any schools out there who are interested in finding out
more, please get in contact with me, Ken...@aladdinschools.com or
in...@aladdinschools.com . We’re very excited with all the positive
feedback we received at the CESI conference.

We’re also working with Steven at Camara.

I hope that doesn’t cross the commercial line here. :-)

Thanks,
Kenneth

Thanks to all for the ideas. Pity there aren't more alternatives (yet)..... competition is a good thing.

I don't know if this is any good but found a link to it from The Apple
(http://theapple.monster.com/education/articles/8953--15-tools-to-help-
you-go-paperless?page=3) to Engrade

http://www.engrade.com/
If the About page is true, it looks pretty incredible:
"Our service is truly free and will remain free. We are able to offer
Engrade free of charge because we have been fortunate in past
businesses, allowing us to volunteer our talents and to pay for
expenses out of our own pockets. In the future we may add optional
premium services (for example, a service to send student transcripts
to colleges) to help pay for costs, but we'll always keep the main
features free."

I use e-Portal in a UK-based school and while I've no idea about the
price, really hope it's not that expensive (It does the job but clunky
interface and illogical setup of some tools does not mean that it
sells itself very well to me!).

Hi all,

I'll just put it out there, I run an IT shop in Kilkenny and would be
willing to help any school that was thinking of using this software.

I've no experience with this software as such but I have 15+ year
experience with using and deploying open source software, Linux and
all that it entails :)

I would be able to offer my services free in relation to installation
and maintenance for any school that is thing about using it, as I
think this is a worth while application for use with schools.

Hi,

Just trying to gather some knowledge...
I'm involved in a project and part of it is moving eportal from "old hardware" to "new hardware", in same school/network.

Anyone did it, how does it go, what exactly needs to be done ?!
I would like to get it running on Server2008 R2 x64 and on SQL2008.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Stephen,

Just having some 'fun' with Serco at the moment...

Your idea looks interesting.
I might be able to bring on-board somebody that does heavy SQL and database programming and we might be able to get this project off the ground !
I have a System Engineer' background but surely we can work out something together !

Let me know how you want to do first step ?! Perhaps a nice cup of coffee and a chat, time permitting ?!!

Regards.

Perhaps it already widely known that it would appear that Facility
Admin (the foundation upon which ePortal depends) will run using mySQL
as the underlying database. I only carried out a quick investigation
into this but initial indications are positive. This in turn might
open up possibilities without the need for SQL...

I tried with the current version of Facility Admin a few months ago - don't have the exact version number to hand but it would have been the most recent update as required for October Returns 2010.
