I was wondering if anyone on the list would have any ideas regarding software for a primary school library, we are looking to invest in a basic scanning or bar-code system where books can be tracked electronically ??

Anyone with any thoughts or previous experience that could help it would be really appreciated,

Martin

Hi Martin,

I'm the librarian in our school (Colaiste Cois Life)and we got a great package from a Galway based guy called Sean Mulkerins, he sold us the software 'Databiz School Library' which he designed himself and he also sold us the scanner too. We are delighted with it and he was always at the end of the phone for any queries. His number is 087 776 1405

Hope this helps,

Roisin

Hi Martin

In a previous school we used eclipse and they have an excellent system aimed at younger students called "junior librarian" - it worked really really well

Hi Martin

We went with Screenway in Galway. They did a demo, installed (including pupil and book database), trained teachers and provided ongoing support. This is our third year with it and are very satisfied. The database itself does not have a very sophisticated look about it but this doesn't bother us!  We bought the whole mac package with it which daunted me at first (personal apple phobia at the time)but now delighted that we bought a separate computer for just this purpose. All teachers, SNA's etc very comfortable using it. One drawback is that they keep saying they will do a manual (either online or hardcopy) but I haven't seen it yet. They can also troubleshoot remotely once you are online.
We are in Sligo if want to have a peep at it....

Hi Martin

I would wholehertedly endorse what Roisin said about Sean Mulkerrins.
we got him to install that library system as well as an attendance and
admin package ( sols separately) and are really pleased with it and
with his support. His website is http://www.databizsolutions.ie/

The system works via bar codes that is really simple to operate ( the
children can run it easily in senior classes ) We got the bar code
scanner as part of the package. You will have a fair bit of work to do
initially to set the system up, you may have to enter details of some
books in your system manually but Sean has a pertty impressive
database of books that minimise the amount of data entry you have to
do. You will then have to print off the bar codes and stick onto your
books as well as set up class lists of pupils, but these can be
imported from spreadsheet files to save work too. But it is well worth
it in the end as the value you get out of it is huge.

Hope this helps

I've worked with Seán Mulkerrins on a couple or projects and can relay that
he's very nice to deal with, and certainly knows his stuff - credit where
it's due ...

Kindest Regards,
Seaghan.

Hi Martin

Hope this helps
