Has anyone found a solution for this?
I have a teacher who has (~30) old DVD that he shows classes. He would like
to switch to a Chromebook for teaching.
----
Is it possible to plug an external dvd drive into a Chromebook to play
dvds? Or is there an easier way of doing this?
----
I found videos on YouTube of people who had done this so I plugged an
external dvd drive into a 2016 acer r11 to try this.
I downloaded the VLC android app and also tried the VLC chrome extension -
unfortunately I could get neither working with it.
-----
I'm convinced someone in the CESI community has a solution!
Best wishes
Eoin

You will need to rip the DVD to mp4 and then you can play via USB stick
Handbrake (with possible addition of libdvdcss dll) is a free DVD ripper,
similar to VLC but is a dedicated ripper.
I am ripping ToKillAMockingBird as we speak - full report later...

Hi Eoin,
Hope all is good…
I totally second Greg’s suggestion - I use Handbrake all the time… even for taking videos shot on iPads/Phones/etc and reducing file size… it’s a remarkable tool.
As well at that - free! (I’d love to pay them)
Available for Mac, Windows and Ubuntu…
Can’t go wrong.
Many thanks,

Assuming it is an unencrypted DVD: Since the external DVD can be read as a
mass storage device I'd just use youtube to convert to mp4. upload from the
VIDEO_TS the VTS*.VOB files. Use the Video-editor to append them to each
other. If you want you can download as mp4 and play from stick or gdrive or
whatever..
One risk is that the disk may contain copyrighted audio or video that may
be recognized.
One advantage is that it will be backed up.
Another advantage is that he can do it himself with 1 external reader or
from home and without needing other hardware/software.
I hardly ever transcode myself, almost always let youtube do it.

Hi,
Thought I'd share some brief thoughts on the day.
Firstly I really enjoyed it!
There were three main ideas that I got:
1. As ICT has been seen to reduce communication & relationships in
general, it is important for teachers to find ways to use ICT that improve
& increase communication and allow for relationships to grow.
2. Teachers that use iPads in the classroom consistently have a core 5 or
6 apps that they know well and don't stray far from. These apps would
include a presentation app (e.g. NearPod) an assessment app (e.g quizlet),
and perhaps a portfolio app.
3. Pupils aged 7 and up should really only be using creation apps, not
content heavy apps.
I've also been inspired by Cormac's green screen presentation. So much so
that we have ordered four of these green chairs (
http://www.abal.ie/product/heavy-duty-poly-chairs/) - we needed them anyway
- (sort-of!!) and I'm actually looking forward to a visit to Guineys this
weekend... Considering doing mini video projects with four different
groups of SET pupils when their current season of Bricks Club (ie Social
Skills with Lego(TM)).
Thanks to John Hegarty for sharing the original link and to Seán O'Gradaigh
for the organisation.

Dear CESI list members,
As a quick introduction I am a Ph.D. Candidate and a teaching primary school principal who has been working on a new model of teacher CPD which aligns with the Digital strategy for schools, the Digital learning framework, the Cosán framework and the UNESCO ICT Teachers' competence framework. Briefly, the model tasks teams of teachers to work together to co-create, implement and evaluate teaching and learning activities which embed digital technologies in practice, gradually incrementing from teacher directed teaching and learning activities towards student centred self-directed learning experiences.
I am looking for any primary schools who may be interested in using the model as part of their digital clusters application, the model may be used as a stand alone application or alternatively to support existing applications and it provides a 21st century learning framework for teachers to collaborate within in order to develop their existing practice with digital technologies. Furthermore, as part of the project I will provide participating schools with a collaborative online environment to scaffold their learning and an online repository to store and display their co-created teaching and learning activities to the wider education community.
If you have an interest in the above please email me and I will be happy to answer any questions that you may have,
Warm regards,
Dermot Walsh

Hi,
I was looking through the ‘sturdy laptops’ posts and was just wondering if those who were buying back in October have anything more to add or update Re their purchases.
I have to get quotations for some laptops for a special school, WiFi not great. Any suggestions?

Hi Irene,
Just going to go a different tangent… a few questions…
Is the special school Mild, Moderate, Severe/Profound, ASD, EBD or which?
I ask as the needs of the students may vary depending on where they’re at. I service a Moderate, Severe/Profound school and the students stopped using laptops a few years ago due to continuing difficulties…
There were screen breakages, drooling on the keyboard, keys pulled off, etc… they have since moved to iPads with Survivor cases, switches and bluetooth devices (speakers, etc.) - more durable, easier for the students (apps are simpler, larger selection to choose from, long battery life, etc.)
Also - just to check - is your Wifi not great - or your broadband connection? (Very different things)
Many thanks,
Chris Reina
