Hi Marguerite

I heard today that we will be receiving a cheque in the post this June. You will be responsible for buying your own computers.

Can't see that happening. Given that solid works have the software contract the potential for schools to buy unsuitable hardware is massive. Also some preferred suppliers may not have expertise in the cad software.

If there is not a framework there would need to be some list of approved hardware.

When I've asked in the past the answer always seemed to be 'you will get correspondence next week' but next week never comes!

I can’t find anything on it but I think that I heard that solidworks got the software and that there would be an announcement on the hardware supplier soon.

The DES have contacted schools to verify numbers and grants will be out soon also.

It makes sense to do as they did the last time and go with a preferred supplier. Grant is based on average students over three years x cost of one machine.

FAQ is here http://www.t4.ie/DCG_Computers_FAQ.html

Hi,

(this is not an official communication from the DES, but rather an effort to provide an update until the letter from DES arrives in schools)

Unfortunately there has been a number of issues which have caused delays in finalising the details. However these seem to be now resolved, and as such (bar any last minute hitches, Murphy’s law etc) qualifying ‘DCG’ schools will receive a letter from the DES, most likely on Wed and Thurs of next week, with the funding details for their school.

Regards

Tom

I sincerely hope accidental damage cover and extended warranty are included, particularly for the laptops. It would be madness to buy hand end laptops for school use without it.

We will be going desktop anyway.  Our dells are gone slow but humming away since 2008!

Hopefully the Fujitsu will be as reliable. We have had some trouble with the machines we got at the same time (school extension) as the DCG comps. 25/25 dells still working approx 60/130 Fujitsu, graphics cards dead, power supplies bust the list goes on!!

I must admit I've been working on all makes of computers over many a year and Fujitsu never floated my boat. Looking at the PC Peripherals site I imagine the laptop could be Lenovo or ASUS.

Same experience here.  Dell have always been solid.  We have machines going back to early 2000s which are managing to run Win 7 (if a little slowly!)  Hardware failures have been minimal.  Have had a number of Fujitsu PC's and laptops over the same time.  None are operating today.

Pity this hasn't been delivered during term time. It has been announced and reannounced in press releases every couple of months for over  a year now.

There a lot of things to pity about about the whole situation, I might link in with you offline, I didn't get a chance to talk in Dublin .
