Hi All,
Is there anyone on the list who is a 1:1 Chromebook school?. If so what has been your experience with regards to the following:
  • Are all text books available ?
  • How are any apps deployed?
  • Is there insurance purchased with the Chromebook
  • What are the general issues with regards to charging , monitoring pupils while on the Chromebooks etc
Thanks for any response in advance, they are appreciated
Regards
Paul Byrne

Hi Paul
We don't have 1:1 Chromebooks, but we do have 2 trolleys of them...
Textbooks are available through Chrome browser via folenshive.ie or edcodigital.ie etc but as far as I know, there is no native CB app... Is it possible to install the Android apps belonging to the book companies? Possibly, but this depends on how recent the CB is...

Regarding deployment of apps, if the CBs are managed by the school, then this can be done via the Admin Console

On the charging issue, this works fine if it's a class set that's stored in a trolley & plugged in regularly. For 1:1 devices which pupils take home, then you're relying on pupils to bring in the CB fully charged in the morning AND the CB having a sufficient battery to last the day... Otherwise, you ll need lots of sockets, chargers, extension leads...

In terms of monitoring, if the CBs are managed by school (& if you've deep financial resources!) then monitoring software is the way to go. If not, then it's down to responsible use by pupils & classroom management skills by teacher.

On a separate note, while discussing Chromebooks, do schools give them an annual wipe down over the summer to remove cached content & downloaded files, free up space etc?

Hi Paul
We have one 1:1 chromebooks. We have found them great no major issues. The ebook apps work fine for any of the publishers we use. For next year we are mostly selecting books from two particular companies who will create the student accounts and push through the ebooks.

The battery life is very good on chromebooks and charging isn’t really an issue unless students are very careless.

The usual apps are available on the Play Store once your admin allows them for students.

In terms of monitoring students using them, we haven’t yet set up a system to allow teachers to do this. What we have done is limit the apps that are available to students, no games etc, put a background that says Student to make sure they are not signed in to their personal gmail account. This works well for us so far.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions

Marion

We work with one company and students can buy their chromebook from them but they can also choose to buy from another supplier. We leave it up to them whether to buy insurance as we are not involved in this really.

Hi Pat, Marion and Paul.

We have CBs for staff and are considering getting trolleys for incoming first years.
Do you have to go through procurement for trolleys?
Are there 24 or 30 CBs on each trolley?
Would you recommend the trolley route or 1:1?

Thank you

Easy and quick to Powerwash Chromebooks over the summer a few key presses. CTRL + ALT + SHIFT + R

Also important to place them in deep storage mode - https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/9139543?hl=en

Interested to hear what is best practice for laptops running Windows.

I know I definitely need to clear the user cache by deleting user profiles- they build up so quickly and slow the device down. I'm sure there's a more efficient way of doing it then the way I'm doing it!!

Should I place them in deep storage mode too??

Thanks
Natalie

Thanks for sharing this info - can you tell me,

1. Do I need first to sign in as an admim on the device or do it all remotely from the admin?
2. For managed devices under licence how does this impact?
3. I have the option in Admin panel under 'RESET' to 'Clear User Profile' or to 'Factory Reset'
Which is the best option? If I have the forced auto enrolment on I'm thinking Factory REset will work.

Any first hand experience?

Appreciate any help on this.

Many thanks,
Trevor
