I could only find an old post on this so I'll ask again as our school are in the process of purchasing some iPads.

Any recommendations for suppliers? I'll be getting at least three quotes before ordering and so far I'm aware of Stream, Typetec (I think) and Compub. Any others worth contacting?

Thanks.

Screenway is in Galway. I imagine there will be very little variation in prices wherever you go.

Agree that you might not find much of a difference in price but covers, etc might be a good place to knock a few quid off. Really like Stream in Cork.

Definitely talk to Beryl Furlong in Typetec.  I think she will beat the rest when you consider price, backup and training.

We're based in Naas so would prefer someone closer to home than Galway/Cork.

Thanks for the recommendations everyone.

Hi

To the best of my knowledge
Galmac & Screenway in Galway

CompuB Typetech are in Dublin

Stream solutions are in cork.

Back in the day when I was selling iPads these were the main players. I say main players because anyone can sell you an iPad but each of the companies mentioned take huge pride in being educations specialist, you'll also find that these people might be able to offer you education discounts, always look for deals, they might not be able give a discount on the iPad but they might offer something off service or cases.

Hi Nigel

We had to get three quotes last year to supply iPads, and as already mentioned I expected very little difference in price as Apple provide their products at the same price everywhere. There was a slight difference but not much but you could look at other factors when comparing prices or a vendor, like covers with integrated keyboards, after sale service, training provided, backup, security, remote wipe, warranty and etc. Typetec are already mentioned but they have setup a partner business called Wriggle  and their sole aim is to provide iPads and other tablets to schools and other education sectors including 3rd level. They were rolling out iPads last year to teachers in Kildare schools and planning to roll out to students in the future. We used Wriggle and found them brilliant and their training is ideal. Beryl Furlong was mentioned already and also Keith Young who I dealt with. Keith is very helpful. They are based in Ballymount. Hope this helps and I can give you contact details if needed. Their website is www.wriggle.ie

Peter

Hi Nigel,

I second what's been said about Beryl and Keith at Wriggle (Typetec).  Very knowledgeable, professional and ahead of the game.

Wouldn't recommend screen way, only interested in sales, not support or innovation. Found compuB very professional and preogressive.

Many thanks for the replies here.

In terms of the device itself, I'm trying to decide between iPad 2 and iPad Retina. Are we better off with the Retina? The iPad 2 is already starting to feel a bit dated (or is that just Apple's ploy working perfectly on me?). And is 16 GB enough? Has anyone found themselves running out of space when students create documents, images etc.? I have a 64GB iPad 2 myself and can't imagine using anything less than 32 GB.

Hi Nigel,
I would agree about space... Find a lot of apps are quite large and content created with these apps are yet more space - am always chopping and changing to try and make space but usually price wins over in schools and I haven't seen mass purchase of 32GB or 64GB iPads in schools.
A couple of things to note
Compu B are running a
"Back to School Promotion ending Saturday the 19th of Oct!

Buy an iPad for University and get a €50 Compu b gift card or buy a Mac and get a €70 Compu b gift card.

Call in store and a member of our sales team will answer any questions you may have!

t&cs Apply."
That would cover the cost of a Gripcase (my favourite) Griffin Survivor / Otterbox (decent covers). I think that's a great deal.

Secondly, there is an Apple Event when many fans are speculating the announcement of a new iPad (5th Generation) so this will in time impact the cost of the lower iPads. Nonetheless iPad 2 seems to be selling steadily since it's release. I have the newer iPad but find iPad 2 grand for kids at school. AirDrop is the only handy feature in new iPads in schools - but that depends on wifi quality and this in my experience is often not adequate to avail of many of the functions on higher spec devices and notebooks.

Compu B have stores in various locations in Ireland - the price is the same everywhere.

Enjoy the shopping!

Agree with Claire,

I've also noticed that as soon as you put that beautiful retina display into a Survivor case or similar you lose a lot of the extra clarity in any case. I have the iPad 2 in my room and kids don't take a sign of notice. I guess if you were using a lot of graphics it might be worth it but if your buying a few it could mean an extra iPad with the savings.

I think that's quite unfair Laurence. The initial enquiry was asking for advise on suppliers. I don't see how advise on how to save your school money can be seen as promotion. Sure a company name was mentioned but that was the initial enquiry posted. In fact every posting has recommended one company or another. These are not sales pitches. They are advise from teachers who have already travelled this road.

You are correct and  I'm out of line on this. I thought this was a representative of Compu B replying to the list.
I replied as I did because
 1) We already have (correct me if I'm wrong) had a post warning posters on this topic to reply privately.
and
2)I just find lines like:
"Call in store and a member of our sales team will answer any questions you may have! Compu B have stores in various locations in Ireland - the price is the same everywhere.
 Enjoy the shopping! "
read very close to a sales pitch. Close inspection clarifies that the first of these was quoted text, and I had interpreted the whole text as coming from some-one connected with the company.

Joanne Gilmartin I apologize.

Thanks Cormac for stepping in there for me. Laurence I accept your apology but would urge you to carefully examine the content of a thread before making such a response in future.
I was simply trying to save a school the expense of covers which are often omitted in the initial costing of iPad. People regularly come to me asking my advice on anything technology related and my response on CESI is exactly as I would respond on a course or a query through twitter.
Hopefully you will remember me now as we both have been following one another on twitter for some time and clearly my name somehow has been confused for a lurking sales representative rather than a teacher of 10 years.

I would recommend wriggle having got over 300 iPads from them and the iPad 2 is the one that apple recommend for education best value and they will continue to support it. Eanna o bradigh in apple great for advice as well!

Once again, thanks for the replies, it's great to hear advice from people who have made similar purchases as it's obviously a big decision for any school.
