Hello,

This is my first email to the group. I'm teaching 6th class in Mount Sion Primary School, Waterford.

I use video a lot in my class and was wondering what editing software teachers recommend for use in the classroom?

Thanks,
Catherine Whelan.

I teach City and Guilds Catherine, and as part of it I have to teach a module, called Video Software. I am going to explore Blender, Nero and Youtube's editing tools. I loved iMovie back in the day when we did a module in film making back when I did the B.Ed in NCAD.

Blender is Open Source, and has tons of materials.

However, if you are making short films with students, try Animoto Education perhaps! it is excellent!

In school, working in a room with nothing but PCs for the past few years, we went the Módh Díreach and used Movie Maker Live, as it was there, and fairly intuitive, which helped when were 28 students and one me.

Ha ha Catherine! the curse of two firstnames/surnames strikes again! I'm very much used to it so na bac é!

I'll let you know how I get on with it, as I'll be testing some stuff in the next few weeks...

What IT infrastructure do you have btw? I'm a mac person, but in college we just have PC's, so its going from one platform to another thats the problem for me 😵

Haha Keith, That's a problem alright. We have pcs in school. Keep me posted on how you are getting on. I'm hoping to get started in September. I'm hoping to produce a video on child centred learning from the perspective of the boys in my class.

I'm also hoping to get my class to put something together on the decade of 1914 - 1924 in Waterford. History is another passion of mine.

Hi

I've just finished a pilot project where we used MovieMaker.

It's basic but works well and is free.

Ciao

IMHO,
To present a number of small clips with cool transitions, titling, etc. - then Animoto is excellent
To edit (eg trim, normalise audio, add titles, integrate images, and do general editing), I highly recommend Blender (open source), or Sony Vegas Platinum (about €30/€40 on amazon), or the freebies iMovie / Moviemaker etc.

HTH

Kindest Regards,
Seaghan Moriarty.

Have a look at videopad http://www.nchsoftware.com/videopad/

Works on PCs or Macs (The home version is free but only works on windows home edition), also a free Ipad app.
Primary pupils (and teachers of all types) can get to grips with it quickly and it has good features and is easy to use.

Another one to try (we are going to try it tomorrow on our Fis summer course (as well as videopad)) is the GoPro software which is availble as a free download and again its cross platform
