Apple TV's losing network Connection for a few seconds

Can I ask if anybody has come across this issue.

 

We have a school with a few hundred (probably 400 -500) iPads (between teachers and students).

 

The teachers link to their wallmounted projectors via Apple TV’s for class presentations.

 

However some of the Apple TV’s lose the network for a few (maybe 15 – 30 seconds) on a random basis.

 

iPads still working fine but obviously communication to projector is lost. Signal strength is fine and problem is only with some Apple TV’s. Issue is random with no pattern.

 

Have changed HDMI leads to 1mtr. HDMI 2.0 and updated Apple TV’s.

 

I suspect it is Apple TV’s but supplier (well known) has been useless (not returning calls, not replying to emails, etc.) Got nowhere with Apple either.

 

Hard to believe the Apple TV’s are faulty but it is looking that way.

 

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Joe,

I’ve come across this before - but a few years ago now.

I hear you regarding the supplier… I wouldn’t give tuppence for any reseller in Ireland today… unfortunately - service very low on the priority list, staff turnover huge and experience… well, if it isn’t “google-able” then it hasn’t happened.

There’s a lot of devices involved here and my first port of call would be the Wifi network.

So, a few questions…

1) What is the Wifi brand? (Asking because Cisco, Aruba, Unfi all play differently with Apple devices, and Bonjour)

2) What model of Apple TV? [Settings > General > About]

3) Are the ATV wired or wireless?

4) Behaviour (hard to pin down I know, but I have a reason to ask)

So…

1) Cisco has never “liked” Bonjour and I had this same issue with Cisco networking.

Note: Bonjour is used to initially “find” the ATV - then handshaking takes place and it’s handed over to other protocols to establish connection

This is unlikely as the issue is random… however, if there are a lot of devices on the network - it may be that packets are being lost in the broadcast, then it fails until re-establishing connection.

Unifi usually works very good, but if older UniFi APs, then it may have issues. Update Firmware on the APs.

Aruba - not overly familiar with the Dashboard/Interface so can’t help there.

2) If the ATVs are older models, they don’t play very well any more with some Wifi networks (usually 1st, 2nd, 3rd Gen and sometimes the “HD” version)

All the 4K models should be fine.

3) If the ATVs are wireless… definitely cable them. Sending video wirelessly to a wireless device is a bad idea. Always cable the ATVs

4) Lastly (and possibly the least likey)

Behaviour… if the ATVs are locked so only the teachers can broadcast, perfect.

If students can broadcast, sometimes they find hilarity in starting to broadcast whilst the teacher is broadcasting… which will kick the teacher (or anyone else) off the ATV.

Also - kinda the same scenario is this:

a) Teacher broadcasts successfully… then closes iPad and leaves room.

b) Someone else tried to broadcast, but because the teacher did not “disconnect” from the ATV - it doesn’t know which signal it should accept

c) Ensure when finished broadcasting - always disconnect, don’t just close device. The ATV will presume you still wish to connect with that iPad.

Hope that helps in some way… feel free to give a ring if any of that isn’t clear.
