Hi all,

I'm looking for a solution to connect a Chromecast or a Miracast receiver (HDMI) to a VGA projector.

I need a device that has an HDMI input (for the Chromecast/Miracast) and a VGA port for the VGA cable that would normally connect to a desktop PC.
Audio would be nice too but may be resolved with separate speakers.

This seems to be what I'm looking for.

Has anybody already done this successfully or would recommend another product?

This guy has done it but the product he used is off the market.  http://eiuitc.blogspot.ie/2014/03/convert-your-vga-projector-into.html

In an ideal world I'd like a wall panel that could take various inputs i.e. multiple HDMI, display port, mini display port, VGA, DVI and convert to the available ports on the projector.

For projectors that have an HDMI port (or two) and want to use Miracast to wirelessly display their device the Microsoft Wireless Display Adapter works really well (with a Surface Pro 3 anyway).

Chromecast back to back with a Kanex Pro HDMI to VGA adapter.  I know both the individual components work and there is a mini jack stereo output on the Kanex to feed a set of speakers...

Thanks John,

The kanex atv has an HDMI out whereas I want to plug a Chromcast or Miracast receiver *into* it.  Does that make sense?  I need the device to have an HDMI port.

This looks good: (Is this the one you are talking about GP Ashe?)

I'm looking to see who stocks them.  Looks like an L/R audio rather than a simple 3.5mm jack but that's easily sorted.

Eamonn.

You need a back-to-back HDMI connector to that you can join the Kanex and Chromecast together. (NB I haven't got around to proving this theory yet!)

CompuB stock the KanexPro - the ones I have are 3.5mm mini jack for audio.

I used this £10 adapter with the chromecast on the VGA projects in schools works perfect.

Decided against using the Chromecasts as while they are great to stream youtube, neftlix etc there is considerable lag on the screen mirroring, even at 480P.

Perfect for streaming from supported sites and light browsing though.

I have used this with chromecast I use a Hdmi to hdmi coupler like this http://www.lindy.ie/cables-adapters-c1/audio-video-c107/hdmi-c109/hdmi-coupler-premium-female-to-female-p2476 to join chromecast to kanex works perfectly on interactive whiteboard with vga connection in school.

Hi John,

Thanks for your explanation. So just to be clear, you connect the VGA lead from the projector to the Kanex ATV Pro. You connect the Coupler to the other end of the Kanex ATV Pro. You then connect the Chromecast to the other side of the coupler and you connect the lead from the other end of the Chromecast into the USB port of your Chromebook to power the Chromecast. Is that right? This means you can use the Google Cast Chrome extension to cast a tab on your Chromebook or any Android or iOS app which has casting as an option?

I bought a Toshiba Chromebook 2 yesterday with 4GB of RAM and a VGA to HDMI converter

I have a Kanex ATV Pro and Chromecast and so am interested if I can use this to cast my new Chromebook wirelessly. Thanks for your advice.

Best wishes

Joe

The kanex is what, €60 plus the coupler about €10. That is €70!

The amazon adapters do the exact same job in a neater package for €15.

I plug the Chromecast into the adapter (which is tiny) that goes onto the VGA and up on projector. Just make sure you get the one with the female HDMI for Chromecast.

Hi Power,

Could you post the link to the adaptor you're recommending which works with the Chromecast? Don't you need to power the Chromecast via the USB lead too? I have my Chromecast permanently plugged into my Samsung TV's HDMI port and the USB lead goes into the USB socket.

Best wishes

Joe

Plenty of gadgets out there and Amazon is a great place to source them. Yes the Kanex is more expensive but it does split out the audio which some cheaper adapters may not.

This is the exact one Joe:

You still have to power the chromecast via the usb as normal.

It has the VGA connector for the projector and an audio connector (standard 3.5 minijack) at the side for your speakers.

I replaced my apple mini display port to VGA adapter with some of CAMACs other adapters, saves you money and gives you HDMI and VGA in one connector, as explained in the post I just made:
