One that came in to me today through the Irish Linux Users Group regarding the future development of OpenOffice.

OpenOffice was being steered along by Sun Microsystems. Sun was recently bought out by Oracle. It looks like many of the developers of OpenOffice are looking to make OpenOffice independent of Oracle and they have forked the development into LibreOffice. This seems to have the backing of Red Hat, Novell, Canonical (Ubuntu) and Google, all big players in the open source world.

I'd say continue to download from www.openoffice.org for now but if/when the new version becomes mainstream we may be downloading from somewhere else.

Link in the email below for more details.

Hey,

A fork of OpenOffice.org and a new foundation to steer it:

 http://www.documentfoundation.org/foundation/

The Irish interest is that our very own Caolán McNamara is a founding
member of its steering committee

Cheers,
Mark.
