Good evening everyone

Im hoping somebody could help me with the following! We are a Google school and mainly use Chromebooks. However, wr have 2 PC rooms that use Windows PCs in addition to students of A.N who also have the use of approved Windows laptops.

More and more, students are getting confused with having a login for the PC and a login for their Chrome accounts. I would really like to move to a one login and one password approach. Any ideas?

I was thinking of the following:
-Scrap the individual PC accounts and provide each year group with a generic PC login and password fpr everyone (same password and account for everyone-e.g Firstyears/ firstyr1 etc)  so that its easy to remember and once they log into that account they will be signing into their individual accounts anyway.
-DCG PC accounts are more important to be kept separate and individual as projects need to be stored there rather than on a drive where students have access to it outside of school time. In that case I was going to create a set of 30 user accounts e.g DCGstudent /password: student1 etc. etc with a different login account for each student of DCG but accounts that can be allocated to that small number of pupils each year without the need of new ones needed each year.

Any thoughts?! Hope all this makes sense! I'm sure it can't just be me grappling with this 2 passwords, 2 logins issue!
Thanks
Bryan

Hi Bryan

We use Google Credential p  that allows logon as a local user on Windows machines, even if they’re connected to a domain

Regard
John

Would setting up Microsoft accounts with the same Google credentials work.
A Gmail email address is OK for a Microsoft account.

Passwords are not synced between Microsoft and Google I don’t think. You can sync usernames, however, between LDAP and Google. If students are using G Suite, then everything can be saved to Google Drive, and by installing Google Credential Provider which also requires Chrome to be installed, then there is syncing between user logon and the Chrome browser.

The use of generic usernames and passwords for the PCs can be a GDPR nightmare if students forget to log out of their browsers so leaving them available (GMail and all) to other students

GCPW is what I use students log in with Google amounts and a local windows account is made for the student.

If you want offline to sync across windows devices that wont work so I would use Google cloud directory sync for that it will keep workspace and o365 accoumts synced

Do you have a local server managing the windows devices ?

No, you could but you don't have to with GCPW, provided you don't care about roaming profiles or syncing of local files.

I’m in the same boat, I was thinking about doing an LDAP syc let google mange the every and let the local server manage the local profiles . At least then all the user names will be the same.

Workflow would be setup user on server sync to Google ? Thoughts

I’ve tried this approach and it’s not quite as seamless as it should be. We use the Googlr accounts so that everything is saved to Google Drive (which can be installed via Windows Group Policy)  Only certain Office files (templates and so on) are saved to local machines for ease of use. PCs are managed by AD server.

In our case, I get students to use the same  credentials for both. So they have the same username and password on both Google and M365. Not ideal as I’m trying to convince them not to use the same password for different accounts but as the username is the same I explain it as a single sign on. Then ensure anything they are working on is saved to Google Drive.

We only recently started using M365 for logging in but trying to move away from general accounts and we don’t have a server in our school so management was difficult.

That’s what i was afraid of it a huge roll back if it doesn’t get work , by the looks of things I’ll go with your suggestion .
Is there anyway we could put the steps together and upload there or do a video about it.

Hello, I have only skimmed the thread but I can't see that anyone mentioned Google Credential Provider for Windows (GCPW): https://support.google.com/a/answer/9250996?hl=en&fl=1&sjid=17729387377323579950-NA

Hello everyone

Just to let you know/anyone that is sourcing a similar solution that I have gone for the  Google Credential Provider for Windows (GCPW). It was very easy to install and seems to work well. I have heard reports that it can spontaneously 'disappear' from the login screen after a few months but when you reinstall it again it remains. We have had it for about 3 weeks now and so far so good. Many thanks to everyone for all the suggestions.

Bryan
