Hi all,

With Windows 10 support ending in October, I’m wondering what other schools are planning to do with devices that aren’t compatible with Windows 11.

Is there any way to extend Windows 10 support for education, or is switching to Chrome OS or replacing the devices the only viable option?

Thanks in advance,
Paul Byrne

Hi Paul,

It’s worth noting that just because support ends for Windows 10 (which is insane) - it doesn’t mean the machine will stop working, just that Microsoft won’t “officially” support it.

Certainly making any of those machines ChromeOS machines is useful - depending on what ecosystem(s) you use (Windows, Google, Apple, Linux). Chrome OS Flex is free to download and install on any of those Windows boxes. (as are many other Linux distros which can emulate Windows machines quite well these days - even on older hardware)

Let me know if I can be of any help.

Many thanks!

Chris

Hi all,

Flexing to Chrome is great; we have done it. My only concern is that students using assistive technology will need Word, also all project work seems to have to be uploaded to Word. How do you get around that?

What makes you think assistive tech is restricted to Word, Aimée? Could you be more specific on the issue you are dealing with?

Maybe it's just us! When our students are sitting house exams, they use Word. I suppose they could use Docs offline?

Plenty of other options Aimee, this has been covered before, you can search the group... so don't let that particular point hold you back - just make sure that the students needing AT have been able to practice with the software picked in advance of the in house tests...

Hi Paul.
Most computers running Windows 10 with 8th Gen CPU's and later, with TPM-2 can upgrade to Windows 11, it's free at the moment, so worth checking your computers for compatibility, similarly with AMD from Gen 2000 and later.
But even if you're computers are not upgradable there is no real need to panic, Windows 10 will continue to work, you just won't have updates, once you have adequate AV/Malware protection all should work with existing hardware and software.

Just to let you know my favourite Admin office Computer is happily running Windows XP

If you need any further help or advice on this matter, call or email

Hi Chris/Val
Thanks for your reply, it does seem crazy to end support. By ending support I assume we won't get security updates which are essential? I know we can bypass the checks but Microsoft now says there is a security risk to doing so , the bypass stops windows checking .
1.    Secure Boot - helps prevent malicious software from loading before the operating system
2.    TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module v2) – this stores encryption passwords on a chip on the CPU

3.    Supported CPUs – many older ones are no longer supported as they don’t support newer security features

In a school environment surely it would not be wise to have this.
Thanks

There's been a lot of chatter about the "end of 10", and a raft of meets and offers of help across Europe for those who'd like to install Linux are listed at their website
https://endof10.org/

The "Windows 10 End of Life install fest" on Sept 25th could be fun! TOG Hackerspace events usually are very enjoyable AND full of folk who want to help:

This site has a few options.

Apparently MS will be offering a subscription per machine to continue Win 10 Security updates, there are also some 3rd party sites that will be packaging Win 10 Security updates as well, but ultimately it looks like a move to win 11 will be the only route at least until Windows 12 launches, and we see if MS decide to remove some win 11 machines from the compatibility list for that.

Project work can be done using whatever you like - yes the SEC template booklets are generally in Word but can be converted to other formats easily enoug.

All work has to be submitted/uploaded as PDF in any case

Students using computers for exams just print off their work and submit the printed pages so it doesn't matter what they use - any text editor is fine. There are no additional marks for "features". And if a student has a spelling and grammar waiver they don't even need a spell-checker as they cannot be penalised for spelling.

A great alterntive for any devices that can't/won't be upgraded is to switch them to a Linux operating system such as Ubuntu. This is a free, open-source alternative, and is also great exposure for students to an operating system used by IT professionals, developers etc, as well as being the operating system used by many servers and devices on the internet.
There's also a huge range of free software and appplications available for Linux systems, plus it's a step towards breaking Microsoft's hegemony, and it's all FREE.

+1 for Linux. Check out Linux Mint it's a tweaked version of Ubuntu with more apps slightly better performance if not using Gnome desktop version.
