Hi All,
I was just wondering if anyone knew of any good typing programs.
The learning support group want to try and introduce a typing module as most students in the resource classes have laptops.

Hi Kieran, we use 'Typingmaster Pro' and find it very good. There are a number of free online typing tutors that you can download to their laptops so that they can practise at home too.

There's also a good number of online typing games like
http://play.typeracer.com/ or
http://www.freetypinggames.us/typing-asteroids (second might be better
for kids).
They can be quite addictive!

cheers,
José

Many years ago I got hold of a free Flash typing tutor. I can't remember where I got it but I keep it on the web beside our website. Very basic but feel free to use. http://www.clongowes.net/typing/typing.html

Mavis Beacon teaches typing has been tried and trusted over the years. There are PC and Mac versions as well as an app for iPads.

There's also typingweb.com which is FREE. I use it with adult learners. It's as good as Mavis but costs nothing. Keeps track of progress too if you sign in.

Hi all,

It is possible to put your own text in so that you have control of the lessons and can guide them in the right direction, i.e. asdf ;lkj  etc.  And then when the students reach a certain target I introduce them to Typeracer, where you go on-line and race your car against others within the same speed range as you so that you are constantly challenged.

If you go above 100 w.p.m. you have to do a test to ensure you are not a machine!

The trick with typing is to make them type SLOW, which is against their natural instincts... but it actually improves speed and accuracy... try it!

Joe above mentioned Typeracer... and yes, I agree, it is very addictive, and a lot of fun.

All the best,
Tricia

We recently bought English Type Junior. So far we are quite pleased with it. You can track the progress of each pupil using this software and we find that feature useful.

Hi
Thanks for all the websites and information. It's a great help.
I will pass it on to the learning support team.
