Hi all,

every now and again we get queries from schools who are looking for an external party developer/company to set up their school website for them.

While many schools have ‘done it themselves’ from scratch, or have used other platforms such as Weebly, many other schools just don’t have the time or the expertise and need external assistance.

While there any many companies who can provide such a service for business customers, including having elaborate ecommerce platforms, sales etc., schools are looking for a specific type of service for their school, and are seeking a service at ‘reasonable’ rates.

In summary schools may require suitable education templates, plugins that support educational needs of their school etc.

Many schools need a company to set up the system, and then the school add and manage the content from then onwards.

If you have a good external party developer/company that you’d like to recommend to other schools, I’d welcome your input, either publicly on this forum or feel free to email me.

Many Thanks

Tom

Simon Doherty (http://www.designbysimon.com) is a colleague who teaches a little, web-designs a lot. Being in education he realises that schools don't need a lot of the frills that some larger companies suggest and also knows that often it may be a teacher who takes on content creation / blogging etc on the site when it is created.

His experience is mostly centred around  making websites for schools including quite a lot of the CETB schools.

His primarily uses Wordpress.

Hi Tom

I do this - been working with Wordpress for over a decade though not specifically schools. I know that Chris Reina does this too...

I'm good at retrieving Wordpress "wrecks" that have not been updated for a number of years, someone forgot the hosting details, password etc. etc. due to change of staff... and I always focus on accessibility, both for the "right" reasons and because it makes your website a lot more Google-friendly.

I have sent on my CV direct to you.

Best wishes

Imogen

Hi Tom,

I can definitely vouch for Imogen’s work - we collaborated together on a number of projects and she is great!

Yes - I manage a number of sites as well - in addition to providing training to the staff/person of responsibility for managing the site.

This works well - there is always a learning curve which takes about half to full school term to become familiar with uploading/changing content.

In addition to this - I often provide training as well for social media content and how that’s managed… Facebook, Insta, Twitter, TikTok, etc...

Unfortunately - social media is usually handled by individual staff members with individual accounts using images, etc on their own devices.

(I am so sorry for the next 4 letters…) GDPR rules state explicitly that this is not allowed. (Not to mention private email accounts being used! - but that’s another day’s discussion)

The really (really!) important thing I find is for schools to retain the “keys to the kingdom” (Login usernames and passwords!) Far too often schools outsource this to someone and there’s a falling out / business closes, any number of reasons.

I’ve been in situations where we had to completely rebuild a site and chase down IEDR for details to regain control of the domain, etc. All costly, frustrating and time-consuming and can easily be avoided.

Happy to chat with anyone about their site, etc. - even offer advice to any school - no strings attached!

Cheers,

Chris

HI Tom,
we use Colm Woods at Big Lemon Digital. Colm kindly donated his time as a parent of students at our school and has subsequently gotten more business from other schools. Very easy to deal with and like others who have been recommended, he knows the limits and expectations of a school as a client. I'm happy to recommend him here.
