Hi All,

A query about setting up laptops, I am wondering how teachers manage laptops applied for under Assistive Technology. In the next month I will have 4 laptops to set up.
Do you send them home to parents to set them up themselves or do you or a staff member do it?
Thanking you in adnance

I would always set up local accounts 1) student and 2) a laptop admin, in case the student locks their account.
I use the Microsoft account bypass.
Never put school software etc.
if there is a home and student O365, I help the parents setup.

I have seen someone set up a laptop using the school's credit card for office annual payments!!!!

Hi Maireád,

It is my understanding that technically these devices whilst got for the named student, should continue with them to second level and/or be retained by the school when they finish their Leaving Cert. They can then be allocated to another student if suitable. I am open to correction on this.

I have always set them up as part of our school system. It is easier in the long run. Parents can then connect them to their own WiFi etc at home.

Regards,

Helena.

As IT coordinator I set them up. I’ll generally download Chrome, a free antivirus and any other software that was recommended on the report. I keep a note of password, serial number of the device/s and security questions. This is then passed directly on to their secondary school when they move on.

Our IT Technician sets up ours as they would a staff device so it is linked to the school network.
They sign in with their Microsoft Office ID then that they use for all school devices, computer room etc.
It makes it easier when they leave and the device comes back to us because we can just delete their profile from the device.

I have a policy that they and their parents sign then too, happy to forward a copy to you if you would like it.

Can you use the same Microsoft email to set up all laptops? I was considering making up a specific Microsoft outlook email and using this for all 4 laptops, I’m not sure if this would work though ?
Can I ask what is the Microsoft bypass?

Going forward I’d like to put a system in place for all laptops received. Up to now, we’ve asked some patents to set them up, but we definitely need a more structured way. We don’t have an IT technician as we are a small primary school, so looking for the easiest way possible for ‘semi / non technical ‘ minds.

Thanks in advance again.

During the setup steps, after you select the keyboard settings. Press Shift and F10 (on laptop you may need to also press FN key) this brings up the command prompt window. This particular bypass option will open a window in which you can enter a local Admin user details.
I personally use this to put in a backdoor user, just in case the student ever gets locked out.
For better instructions, Google search "start ms-cxh:localonly"

There may be limits to the number of laptops which can be associated with a Microsoft account.

Regards
David
