Hi guys,

I'm looking for advice on the Aladdin Schools system. We've just started using the system in our school and I'm wondering if anyone out there has experience of it?
I'd love to find examples of templates/ documents and custom content for us that other schools have found useful on their system. Also are there any tips & tricks anyone would be aware of that are using Aladdin a lot?

Any help or advice is much appreciated!

Contact me off list if you wish! :)

Hi Roy, we’ve been using this for about a year and we’re probably still not using it to its full potential. It takes a while to get everyone used to checking it every day in case principal has posted messages for teachers. One way to help this is I made sure that Aladdin opened up in a tab in the browser of teachers’ computers so that it would be there for them when they opened the browser each day.

It’s also great for recording the collections of monies. At this time of the year, don’t forget that you can use it to do all of your annual school reports which can be customised with school crest, address etc. They are based on the NCCA report templates and you can pick whichever template you wish.

You can also enter the raw scores for all of your standardised tests (we do Drumcondras) and it will do the conversions for you into SS and PR. These scores can be imported into the school report. It will also allow you to graph results of standardised tests of each class.

There’s lots of other stuff you can do with it, you just need to fiddle around with it for a while.

Regards, Damien

Hi Roy

We use Aladdin for almost everything in our school, including roll book, standardised testing, some document sharing, texting and so on. The key to Aladdin (and any of the MIS platforms) is having access to the database of children and being able to use this for reporting on absolutely anything from behaviour to attendance to VLE to library book borrowing. I'd follow Damien's advice and start small and grow at whatever pace suits. We're into our third year on the system and it gets better and better.

Take care

Simon

Hi Roy,

we are into year 3 of Aladdin and I would have to concur with the others. Very user friendly and excellent tech support. The system is constantly evolving so if you identify a need in your school give them a call and request that additional functionality. It integrates well with Google apps. We are currently using it to edit and create report cards and it is going to make life much easier as editing is done in the system rather than with Nitro etc.

Drop me a line off list if you have any other questions,

It converts the Sigma scores from the raw scores. But you need to input the raw and standard scores for Micra.

It's instant Tony but it's got nothing to do with Fallons though.

Thanks Roy.  Can you say if it is instant or does it have to be uploaded to Fallons site?

Yes it does Tony, it makes keeping those records way easier.

Tony,

am currently looking at exactly this issue. Aladdin will not convert from raw score to standard scores (it used to but Fallons put a stop to it I believe). If you put in raw score and standard score then it will do the rest in terms of STen and percentiles. You could leave teachers to do the conversion to standard scores (although that is soul destroying work) or you can use Fallons Scorz programme (www.scorz.ie) to do the conversions. Its a little bit tedious having to set the system up (but its a one time job). Then what I did was export all the student data from Aladdin into scorz, used it to do the calculations and then exported that back into Aladdin. It means the teachers will have to do a little bit of work rematching records but it is far easier than ploughing through the conversion booklets.

regards,

John

Sorry my info was obviously out of date! I haven't checked this year (new school, junior infants only -so no standardised testing)- but last year no problem with inputting Sigma, Micra and Drumcondra- seems fairly churlish of Fallons to obstruct this.

Thanks to all who have given information on the situation regarding Sigma/Micra.

Does anyone know why is Fallons holding the system to ransom.  Schools buy the tests from Fallons so surely it makes sense to allow schools to find the easiest way possible to convert scores, analyse and report.

Wouldn't it make more sense to allow Programmes do this than have the schools move to Drumcondra which seems to have taken a more pragmatic approach in allowing the schools use whatever tools are available to speed up the process.

Tony,

I threw this one to the fallons rep and the reply was that they could not stand over the accuracy of the conversions done by another party!

Bullsh...

Completely agree Tony. But I'd say it's quite simple really... they're protecting their own conversion software!

So tell me then do - how can they stand over the accuracy of the result if I sit down with a manual and flit from page to page finding Standard score and then the next conversion to sten or percentile.  What a load of codswallop.  If the tables are set up once in the software and verified then it is down to the individual entering the raw score to get that right.

Oh my God talk about waffle.
