Teaching computing in Ireland.

Ict is not funded currently in secondary as a subject. We do have courses in computers at post leaving cert. You need another subject or two subjects with it. Then you would teach Ict in secondary courses in fetac at plc post leaving and the other subject(s). Usually Ict is taught by maths science or business graduates with a teaching qualification. Its an appendage to a teaching job. I am sorry to say that we are way behind the UK and with no plan to catch up. Computers cost money and need finance to administer and keep up to date.

I wonder if there are any users of Incomedia Website X5 on here. I had a
class website created with Website X5 but the PC that had the original
files crashed (literally crashed down on a tile floor) and the hard drive
is so corrupt that the cost of recovery is prohibitive (and did I have this
drive backed-up - of course not)

I have the website on line intact but is there any way to download and
recreate it on laptop so that it can be updated.

Thanks.

Hi Nicky

You could try one of the following

http://pagenest.com/buy.html costs EUR29.95

http://www.httrack.com/ is free

WinHTTrack is the Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Seven release of HTTrack, and
WebHTTrack the Linux/Unix/BSD release.

Thanks Val but I don't think that will help. I don't know Website x5 well
enough. I can download all the files but x5 will not read them as they
need to be in a project file as I understand it. Someone who uses x5 may
have better knowledge than I have.

Hi Nicky,

The project file type is .iwp and/or .iwzip.

On occasion, I have taken the hard disk out and placed it inside a ‘hard disk caddy’. Attach this to another PC in order to, hopefully, recover the file.

Must dash now and make a backup of my own drive!

Kind regards,

David

That's definitely worth a try, just because a hard drive fails to boot,
does not necessarily mean that all files are lost.

Nicholas Handy <tishan...@gmail.com>: Sep 23 11:18PM +0100

Thanks David and Willie but I have done all the usual myself. put it in
another computer as second drive, tried it in caddy, ran Stellar Pheonix
Pro and then took the drive to the experts. They tried rescue software
without success and suggested a figure to try the next process . I'd need
to be the winner of the euro millions. There was nothing of value on the
disc except the website files so spending money to rescue it wouldn't make
sense.

Thanks

Hi Damian,

Used the procurement route twice for Mayo schools over the past four years.

I set out weighted criteria with cost and battery life getting equal weight of a third each and other criteria being a final third.

On both occasions, two years apart, HP won, supplied by Brian in Compupac in Sligo. So may be no harm to go direct.

If you'd like to see the excel template I used please email me off-line.

Hey all
Great group!! I am England, recently moved to Ireland (marrying a Kilkenny lady!) and have been teaching Computing in England for 10+ years (previous to the teaching career I was an IT consultant for Pfizer).
I have huge experience in standard traditional Office Apps, but have taught programming to pupils via Scratch, Greenfoot, Kudi and some Python via Raspberry Pi technology, taught Animation through Adobe Flash and Serif DrawPlus, Photography and digital design ( Fireworks, Photoshop), Web authoring with Dreamweaver and PagePlus and Movie making/editing with Movieplus, IMovie and Aftereffects.
I be honest I am looking for work, my early research into this and dialogue with professionals suggests Computing's door is a jar in the curriculum, but moving slowly with schools apprehensive to make big changes.
Therefore if you know of any schools or visionary principles willing to make the change please could you let me know (I can't help but feel Irish children are missing out on an amazing subjet).
IN ADDITION i have a huge bank of resources on the above (mostly self created) I would be delighted to of course share then with you so if you are in need of some materials please let me know I will send them on
Keep up the good work !!

Hello everyone,

PDST Technology in Education is involved in a European project called
Living Schools Lab. One of the British primary schools involved in that
project is seeking an Irish primary school to participate in "a
ground-breaking enterprise challenge developed and run by Broadclyst
Community Primary School (BCPS) and funded by Microsoft."

See information below from the Headteacher of Broadclyst and
http://globalenterprisechallenge.education/. Please contact the school
directly if you are interested in participating in their project.

Kind regards,
Karin Whooley

*Subject: Give your students a head start in business! Join the Global
Enterprise Challenge.*

Dear Colleague,

Are you looking for an exciting, real-world challenge for your students?
Our aim is to connect schools and children from across the world into one
global education project, helping the students to increase their awareness
of cultural diversities, and gain an understanding of business. We would
like 20 schools in 20 different countries to get involved with the project
and we would love to have your school on board!

Broadclyst Primary School, England has run a business enterprise project
with its pupils aged 10 and 11 for eight years. We have found it hugely
motivational for the children, and exciting for the teachers, the
enterprise project incorporates business skills including product design,
market research, manufacture and marketing and it encompasses many
different elements of the curriculum, putting the children's learning into
a real-life context.
Headteacher Jonathan Bishop took the Broadclyst enterprise project concept
to a global level during the 2014 Microsoft in Education Global Forum. In a
Dragon's Den style pitch against ideas from schools from around the world,
he put forward the idea of taking the current project and making it into
the Global Enterprise Challenge. This was the winning pitch, and BCPS was
awarded $25,000 to make the Challenge a reality.

During the Challenge, 1000 students across 20 countries will connect to run
ten international companies, each with ten regional offices/teams. Their
start-up funding from the Microsoft award will be $50 (€40/£30) per team,
$500 (€400/£300) per school. The teams, developing, producing and marketing
ten products selected, in a pitch situation, by the project co-ordinator,
will be competing with each other to become the most successful company
globally.
The project is based entirely around the use of Office365 and no other
platforms can be used. The platform can be used in browser format, allowing
schools with a range of equipment to participate. All schools will be
registered by Broadclyst Community Primary School into Office365 and each
child within the challenge will have Office365 account that will give them
access to Yammer, Email, Lync and Office software.

The most successful company will be flown to Seattle to the Microsoft HQ to
meet Anthony Salcito – the Vice President for Education World Wide. He will
present the winning team out of the 200 teams with the award. Please find
more information about the project from
