Hi,

Our school are switching over to Eircom eFibre from Scoilnet broadband due to download and upload speeds being way too slow. The problem in doing so is that we will lose automatic filtering of inappropriate content. Has anyone experience of what software (cheap or even free) would suit our needs?

Thanks in advance.

Slightly off topic, I'm wondering do you have 100mbit sbs and  what guarantees will you get on speeds, contention, and data cap with Eircom?

Hi Mark

Talk to the NCTE sevice desk first.

Depending on your current situation (ie if you have a poor satellite connection etc)  they may
take over the eircom line and provide you with filtering. They have done so in the past

Mind yourself up there in the west!

Regards
Willie

Some schools have tried opendns as an economic filtering solution

Hi Mark,
Could I also suggest the Procon Latte content filtering extension for Firefox. Very configurable, but Firefox would have to be the only browser used.
Firefox + opendns might be the way to go.

Nigel

Free version will only work for a single IP so you need to be NATting - which if you are not using HeaNet vanilla config you will be in any case.

OpenDNS (free) is fine up to a point but has limited features and adding blocked/allowed sites is cumbersome.

It seems to me to be a ridiculous situation the DES NCTE PDST HEAney or what ever organisation is in charge of procurement cannot simply move the filtering service onto eircom lines and by all means go on paying the original provider something in lieu of the contract they cannot fulfil.  Then let the school, which at huge costs to its own meagre budget is willing to fund a reliable service for the good of the children, provide a quality service with fear of security and safety issues.  It is bureaucracy gone mad.

Hi,

as a parent, I and some of my colleagues in work, use opendns.org .  I have registered for the free version and it only takes one change on the internet facing router to change the DNS settings..
on the opendns.org site you configure the options that you want to allow/block..for all users accessing the internet.

regards

Tony

Just be aware that OpenDNS, while fine for what it does (and I use it on my home network, you'd be daft not to) does not by itself prevent access to sites.
All it does is prevent name lookup.

There are various ways to bypass it's filtering mechanisms so you will need to combine OpenDNS with additional measures if you really want to lock down you network (proxy servers for example). There is plenty of information on the OpenDNS forums about this.
