Hi, Any feedback or thoughts on  the use of Joomla fora school website.  Currently the school website is running an old version of Joomla - it needs updating 'I think' but i think it's going to cost a lot. I'm not sure it's worth updating.  Should we look at building a new website on wordpress or another platform instead of spending money upgrading Joomla.  The feedback in the school is that Joomla is very hard to manage - i.e. to upload photos, articles, blogs etc, not that easy for teachers to do!

Or what are schools using to build their websites and have found easy to manage?

Is anyone else using Joomla and if so, how do they find it?

Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance, Deirdre

Hi Deirdre,

I have used Joomla for a community website in the past and found it very difficult.  I wouldn't dare consider it for my own school anyway.

For ease of use and little technical knowhow required we use Wix in our school.

Wordpress is another option for ease of use but does require a degree of background technical knowhow to keep it running and safe.

Wix won't let you migrate a site to another provider in the future as far as I know.  Wordpress is more flexible that way.

Both have apps that will allow teachers update the site.

Weebly is another option.

All the best.

Paul

Paul's summary was exactly what I was going to say, but more concise, Deirdre!

Hi, as per Paul, something like Wix or Strikingly as long as it's just the school's front end website and doesn't contain PII/student data.

Running Wordpress in an AWS Lightsail (Bitnami Image) from Ireland 'eu-west-1' is another low cost option but actually requires technical configuration skills and ongoing maintenance + DNS, and when you have issues it takes time and/or money to resolve.

The beauty of something like Strikingly is the WYSIWIG(What You See Is What You Get) website editor, no maintenance or patching, and *they* worry about the ongoing security. You can register new domains or bring your own and you also get a free SSL/TLS security certificate thus Strikingly is what we recommend here https://make.defensible.ie/web

Humble regards,

Which platform have schools found the easiest for non- techy people to update. Is there any platform with a simple app whereby teachers can update the website from their phones easily. I know I ran into a bit of trouble with wordpress and the size of pictures.

There is a specialist and inexpensive wordpress hoster that specialises in schools and third level educational sites - Reclaim Hosting. There is no need to do it yourself on budget grounds. I can recommend Reclaim, their tech support is excellent and their response times are great.

We use Weebly. It is easy to use and anyone can work it to put up pictures and text. Especially for someone who doesn't have programming experience.
