Hiyall
Can anyone recommend really good CPD options on AI in education for secondary school teachers. I stress really good because unfortunately I've seen and heard of speakers varying from too basic to downright insulting spoofers. I won't go into details 😅
And yes, I realise that AI in its nature is evolving rapidly in so many ways. I feel there's a massive opening there, not just in my neck of the woods, but nationally, for a provision of detailed, informed, up to date and relevant CPD on AI in education.
Would love to hear thoughts

Hi there Pat

If you are coming in cold I would also recommend the Google AI teachers course or the MS Copilot course on MS Learn

Ceadar which is the AI Centre for Ireland have a free course which has a section on EU AI ACt which is worth being aware of

I check this site every time it blogs https://nationalcentreforai.jiscinvolve.org/ look for their Gen AI Primer

Really it is podcasts that I use to keep up todate.

Hi Pat,

I do cross-curricular AI training all over the world and I often come to Ireland too. Here is a menu of resources I've put together and suggest teachers cherry pick what they'd like me to train them on:

Hiya John
Should've explained a bit further, it's for the benefit of my colleagues I'm enquiring. Very few educators are coming in cold to AI at this stage.

Rather than looking at specific tools, plugins or extensions, I'm thinking of the general ethics around AI in education, the dangers & the benefits... where we're at & where we're going with it etc

Ceadar looks interesting, thanks for the tip

Should Oide not be rolling this out as part of ongoing Teacher Training CPD?

Maybe they are?

Hi Pat,

The ADAPT AI Centre has some nice online supports as well as in person workshops. I like what I've seen so far: https://ai-literacy-in-the-classroom.adaptcentre.ie/about/

The following are details of parts of my personal journey.
I’ve signed up to a newsletter here:
which gives me an interesting feed of breaking AI stories.
In terms of AI ethics, I’ve downloaded a number of research papers from the Eric Database here:
https://eric.ed.gov/ and would fire them into NotebookLM for summaries, and to query their content.
For Ethics, a deeper dive is more complex, and I’ve audited a couple of fairly comprehensive online courses. I hesitate to make specific recommendations as its a very fast moving field. The First course I did was on the edX platform, and from I think the University of Delft, in 2016, and the second was from the University of Edinburgh, on the coursers platform, and I started it in 2023.
However I did get a fairly comprehensive, and thought provoking response from ChatGPT, using the following prompt:

“Moving from the general to the practical In an educational setting we have the following concerns: The ways AI can infer and extrapolate sensitive information from user interactions—sometimes beyond what is directly provided. The legal and ethical hurdles surrounding privacy protections, including challenges in recognizing and proving privacy harms. Best practices for anonymizing or minimizing data shared with AI, applying the principles of data minimization, least privilege, and informed consent. Strategies for both organizations and individuals to safeguard private and sensitive information, such as implementing rigorous access controls, relying on synthetic data, and maintaining vigilant data governance practices. Could you expand on these issues, with a European Focus, in particular being cogniscent of GDPR and European legislation which defines AI in Education as a high risk area”

I would suggest that anyone with an interest in this area, might care to fire that in, and see what comes out. I found it particularly good.   The prompt came from the topics list for a course on AI for American Librarians, but I put the European legislation spin on it to make it more relevant to our practice here.

Finally, I have just completed the Adapt course, and you could do worse than spend an hour or two working your way through this.
Best

John has included links to most of the CPD courses there.

ADAPT also have a course for teachers. I haven't attended it, but judging by the comments on LinkedIn posts about it, the focus is about ethics etc and the resources online are very good... https://ai-literacy-in-the-classroom.adaptcentre.ie/
I feared that most AI courses up to recently were too focused on the "the tools" so its great to finally see this shift in focus! (Although there is still some hype out there so I hear your frustration :) )

To improve my own "AI literacy" I have a list of stuff I go to from different sources (I really need to compile them) but a few resources I've come across to add to the mix that i've found really helpful

Only yesterday came across this fun but impactful video by Kurzgesagt: AI slop: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zfN9wnPvU0
A good summary: (Re)Introduction to GenAI for Schools 2025 https://leonfurze.com/2025/01/20/reintroduction-to-genai-for-schools-2025/  Raspberry Pi have some great videos:

Media literacy in the age of AI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCe-iOA7N9M

Video: Anthropomorphism (AI safety: The risks of humanising AI) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtX2g_gpjAQ&list=PLxyaWvsfmq4-uz-_p7dofajUkkJSthfo0&index=25

And if you're looking to make your own resources you will great some really nice images here that are NOT AI GENERATED:

Lots of good stuff posted here,

Oide has a mailing list on digital tech. Last year they hosted an AI Think In, it was over subscribed at the time. This is the link to mailing list to stay ahead of the hoards http://tiny.cc/digtechmailinglist

Thats a fairly heavy read, but does seem to cover most of the principles well. As teachers we have a duty to move the dialogue on from pretty pretty shinny shinny to issues like fairness, justice and equity of opportunity. How we do that remains a very open question.
