Just wondering if Flash can be used on Android, sometimes it would be convenient to access sources like e-books on tablet, but it won't open the pop-ups? I know there was always an issue with compatibility, but is there an easy way around it now? The tablet (galaxy tab 4) is on kit-kat.

There are ways, but none are 100% and all have some sort of glitches …

Prior to version 4.4 (I think), I was able to side-load Flash and happily access flash sites in the normal android Browser. However, since 4.4 this does not seem to be an option. I now access these sites via the Dolphin browser

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mobi.mgeek.TunnyBrowser&hl=en

…however, the Flash content may or may not run as smoothly as before – you have to test the particular sites one by one

Kind regards,

David

I installed the Flashfox browser from the Playstore. Works well on sites with flash.

Flash is arguably dead. while support for it will exist for some time, HTML5 CSS3 and Javascript do what flash does a lot better thanks to contemporary browser standard compliance.

Basically any device that cannot support flash is internet crippled, particularly with respect to legacy sites which covers a lot of good educational resources. Making an argument that they will all be rewritten, is like making an argument that there is no point learning any languages other than english, because anything that important will be translated eventually.

Having made that point, HTML5 is for a variety of reasons the way to go for development, but in a lot of respects, it has not yet arrived.

I could not agree more with the fact that to ignore all the wonderful educational resources created in flash, is to deny the last 10 years maybe 15 years of educational resource development. Will it be revisited? I don't think so  because of the cost and in a lot of cases because of the time frame required and the educational moment that might have passed for some developers and yet their creation is relevant despite being in flash.             Sent from someone who knows the time it takes to turn an interactive biology book and an interactive science book in flash into every device friendly interactive books. It is a bit like starting all over again except without the 100 percent creative endeavour.

It always depends on what flash software you created it in. Not all of them can be converted using free software, I am afraid.

Despite the fact I have bought the new software to convert  my flash interactions specifically, I will explore what you have offered, but not tonight. I am in Marrakash about to do the Atlas mountains in the morning. Just checked my emails before Noddyland. But I will revisit your possibilities for other linked sites I have when I get back. Thanks.

I'd also caution that a lot of those resources from the last 10 to 15 years have a shelf life and may not be relevant. For those resources that are still relevant there are serious questions to consider: (a) are they accessible to students with special educational needs - do they have subtitles for example, (b) flash is riddled with security vulnerabilities, are we exposing student devices to malware and viruses, and (c) flash was poorly written, hogging performance, battery power and frequently bugging out. I could put up with technical challenges, but accessibility is the major one for me - flash-based resources may may not be inclusive for all students.
