Is there any primary school using Office 365 with their pupils and have assigned accounts for ePortfolio use that can offer any details on how they find it? Are pupils assigned their own email address that they have to use for log in like the teachers?

Hi there,

Yes, we are 1:1 and each student has their own 365 account. They use their logins on their device. We have set up OneNote Classroom Notebook and in that each student has their own private section that they and I can see. In this I have set up an assessment section- videos/audio of work completed in class individually go here. Class notes can be sent to each student in the class with two clicks. They have a homework section where they can add audio/video/write/type. Their parents can easily see their portfolios as they are created.
There is a collaboration section where they can all work together on various projects and a content library that I upload work to and can only be adapted by the teacher. In the content library I have a section for each curricular subject and build up a repository of work during the year.. In Irish for example I have uploaded audio of all their Irish reading for the year so they listen at home and work on their pronunciation. It gets rid of the need for photocopied pages etc. Everything is in one place.

As a teacher I have my own notebook where I keep plans and resources and I can send pages to the student notebook very easily as needed.

As a principal we have a team Notebook set up like the student version where each teacher has their own private section that is shared with myself and the two areas for collaboration and content library are also here.

Hope this helps,

Kate.

Thanks so much Kate for all that info. Sounds fantastic!

One further question I have is in relation to the emails the pupils are given when they are set-up on Office 365 - is this an email they can use outside of school? Is there a restriction like with G-Suite that can restrict use to school domain?

Thanks,

Fiona

  • Yes; this can be done by creating a mail flow rule. Straight forward enough and definitely recommended for primary schools! You can also do it selectively – for example you could block every student apart from 6th class from sending email externally.

Hi Fiona,

You can restrict to the school domain as a setting for each student however I have allowed the students to have access outside this as they often need access for project work, for example if they are emailing a professional with queries or inviting someone to the school.

We have a robust AUP that both students and parents must sign up to, we do regular training for all, emails are monitored and when they are emailing they must cc their teacher on the mail. We also check mails before they go out. They are not allowed use devices or emails for personal use and this is clearly laid out from the beginning. So far we have not had any issues and regular spot checks help with this.

Hope this helps,

Kate.

Another way of using ePortfolios through office 365 is to setup a class sharepoint site, you can create individual folders for each student with restricted sharing permissions.  Furthermore you can add blogs, discussion boards and assessments using excel survey.

As regards emails and office 365 one strategy I have found useful is to setup forwarding for any incoming email to the students' parent/guardians email address.  Once all users are informed of this you will restrict potential problems arising from misuse and any issues that do arise will be brought to your attention quickly.
