I have been asked by a colleague for good sites/software for downloading YouTube videos as it is blocked in their school.

I have informed them about changing the NCTE level to allow YouTube but excluding this, what do other people use?

Any recommendations?

Thanks

Stephen

Our school has the same filtering level and we use a tube catcher.
http://atube-catcher.dsnetwb.com/video/content/banco-datos-Download-latest-update.html

Its a freebie but excellent - it lets you set the quality level and also allows you to download the sound only which is great if you wanted a children's song or backing track without the sometimes annoying graphics.

I use Real Player. Can be a little finicky at times but overall I find it very useful. Haven't changed the settings at school. I'm worried that while I might check out videos in advance others might not. :)

Zazar is good for web based also keepvid. If you are on mac there is a nice program called Jaksta which can capture live feeds as well as youtube videos.

Zamzar and Keepvid  **were**  great – but have not been working for youtube for a while now …

Many ‘free’ programs but hard to know if they have ads / tracking / malware

One good reliable program (although it eats up CPU while in use) is JDownloader.

I’d say this would suit colleagues who are pretty confident with IT, but unfortunately probably too technical for the gnáth múinteoir who needs a quick/easy with no learning curve solution.

Also, it needs Java (you probably already have it from Windows Update) and is available for most platforms

So, when you install JDownloader and have this running in the background, simply copy the URL of the youtube video and JD will pop up and say – hey, here are some URLs you copied, do you wish to download them? It also gives you a few different format options (go for the .mp4 option if unsure).

Extra Tip: Also for those of you who (legally!!) download URLs like .rar s etc. – it is great; all you do is copy the URLs you want on the web-page (eg longURL1.rar longURL2.rar … etc) and Jdownloader will download, unzip/unrar and tidy up, as well as integrating passwords if needed, capchas, etc.

HTH

Keepvid still works perfectly for Youtube, I use it all the time and just tested it there with no problems. Maybe you need to check your Java settings Seaghan?

Oops,

Thanks Conor – and my apologies for putting anyone astray. I’d also revise my earlier email to recommend KeepVid rather than JDownloader – it’s much more straightforward, and t works!

Thanks again Conor for alerting colleagues to my mistake.

Seaghan Moriarty.

Still not working for me, Conor. When I paste in the youtube url I still get the 'NCTE Web Page Blocked' message.

It looks like the site is being filtered for you. We are on the 100 Meg but maybe a different level.

I do have issues with Keepvid on OSX as it dosen't seem to like the version of java I'm running so I have to switch to Windows to download the videos.

Try it from home and see if you have any joy, at least you will have narrowed down the problem.

- PROTIP! Ask some of the kids in school, 9 times out of 10 some of the tech savy kids will have tired the sites and found out which ones work in your setup!
