Hi all

This popped into my inbox this morning. I have heard Rose Luckin speak a few times and is usually hits the nail on the head so it might be worth spending the few quid on this if you are a DP, AP or ICT coordinator.

Dear John,

After the M&S cyberattack earlier this year, Sir Dan Moynihan, CEO of the Harris Federation of schools, went on BBC Today and spoke on his experience of their 2021 ransomware attack by REvil, where 55 schools across the UK had access to their teaching materials, lesson plans, registration systems, and staff payroll, cut off.  Recovery took three months and cost £750,000.  For M&S, they admitted to weeks offline after their breach in the spring, unable to process orders while shelves went bare.

The thing that’s changed since 2021, however, is that AI has fundamentally transformed the threat landscape.  Sir Charlie Mayfield (the former chairman for John Lewis) said "these attacks are happening a lot more than people think... and as technology becomes more pervasive, the risk rises with it."

The speed and scale that AI brings to threat actors means this is no longer just a concern for your IT department, it's imperative every educator and leader understand the risks.

AI enables criminals to launch attacks faster and at unprecedented scale, targeting hundreds of schools simultaneously with personalised phishing, deepfakes, and automated social engineering. Every educator needs to understand this connection between AI capabilities and the explosion in threats to your classrooms

10 Questions About AI that School Governors Need to Ask – 16th December at 7:30am

For governing boards

Strategic AI governance must come before scattered implementation. Rose will equip you with the 4D AI Strategy Framework, governance templates, and critical questions about safeguarding, equity, and procurement—tools you need to protect your school's values while leading confidently through technological change

Moynihan’s advice after Harris Federation's blackmail: "don't pay. Don't encourage the criminals."  But this is a stance that requires preparation. On the BBC Today programme Mayfield said "you can't ever be fully resilient. What you have to be is constantly improving your resilience."
