Hi guys,

I am a PhD student at Dublin City  University researching the teaching Computational Thinking to Irish second level students. I was wondering if someone may be able to answer my query regarding the Junior Certificate programme Computer StudiesFrom my understanding, the Junior Cycle Student Assessment has 24 subjects that are examined by written exam, and 10 short courses.

From the department of education statistics,   available at  https://www.education.ie/en/Publications/Statistics/Statistical-Reports/Statistical-Report-2016-2017.xlsx   there are 928 subjects attached to the Junior Certificate programme

Table 4.1: Number of Second-Level Schools Providing Each Subject in the Junior  Certificate Programme Classified By Sex Category of School   .

I can see that there are 299 schools teaching this subject. To be classed as this category, what do schools need to do? Is there a recommended curriculum? Is there a recommended number of hours?  Does this include transition year?

Any clarification greatly appreciated.

kind Regards

Colette

When a school is building a curriculum for its students they may decide to have a class of computers for 1st/2nd  years that may introduce them to the basics of web design or Office applications. In our school our TY's would do ECDL for a couple of periods in the week. For the school to do this they must have a timetabling code to use. In this case it's 121. For most of the other subjects there is a set curriculum but code 121 is generally used for anything IT related within schools apart from say coding which is a new short course that will have its own unique code and will follow its own curriculum.
