Hi All,

We have G-Suite for Education set up for our school domain.

I would like to role it out to my colleagues (we have 7 classroom teachers, 3 support teachers, 2 SNAs, a secretary and a walking principal).  In order to get off to a positive start I would appreciate some points from other primary school teachers/principals on the reasons you love G-Suite.  I hope to make a list of 3 - 5 points that I can circulate to them all.

I did a straw poll during the day yesterday and none of the three teachers I asked had heard of Google Classroom - so while my colleagues are all young and generally comfortable with tech once they're used to it, my experience is that I need to get one or two others on board with an idea first before it flows to the others.

Thanks in advance.

Regards

Paul

Hi Paul,
I help in a primary school that has g-suite. Here are some points for you if they are starting out:

- unlimited storage

- access files from any device

- easy to share files and folders with as many teachers as you like

Following the advice of cesi members last year, the sixth class worked in teams creating a school newsletter last term and used google docs and drive - they found it really easy to write, edit simultaneously, import photos - they had fun!

Best wishes

Would be very interested if you could share what you compile Paul - I am on the BoM of a similarly-sized school and would like to see G-Suite adopted...

Hi Paul,

I'm basing my opinion on being in a school of c.750 users using the G-Suite email system, the Google drive system, benefiting greatly from Google Classroom system and using many other features of what Google are providing free for schools.

In relation to your use of G-Suite, while you might not intend to use it for your primary students at the moment, Google Classroom is a very effective way of communicating with staff. (Especially when they have the App on their phone (and notifications turned on))

I'd encourage you avail of the email system for your students. (Permissions etc and range of use issues would need to be addressed)

Check out the Apps that you can add to your system .... BrainPop, Flubaroo, LucidCharts are all available. (The range is the proverbial 'as long as your arm' and their use is age and ability specific ...... but at least you have a choice  .... and yes, there can be costs involved!)

The fact that the G-Suite system is free, used world-wide and user friendly is an enormous plus.

The attached link is a flier that has been used before. (Hope it helps)

One of the features the pupils and I love is live editing docs, projects, presentations etc. where all students can view and benefit from corrections and proof reading.
E.g pupils have homework on say drafting a profile of 'Ed Sheeran' using Google apps of their choice. The completed files are shared with the teacher from their Google Drive accounts. When the teacher opens and projects the doc for the class to view, live editing can take place. The student can re-draft and make updates from their desk with peer learning and collaboration from classmates and teacher.  This has worked well in my small classroom setting. Common mistakes have become less and less and the immediate corrections for teachers and students lighten the workload for everyone.
Google apps are also excellent for self-assessment. Students learn how to create and manage folders and files under various subject headings where they can keep records of their work and then share or access when required.
I could go on and we have lots to learn about many of the apps yet.

From my point of view G-Suite is : intuitive easy to deploy with feck all friction attached to it .

Why? Well its probably the best and easiest way to do peer collaboration on documents, share survey and results with parents and by far the easiest way to create an mini e-portfolio for the student.

In a particular school I was in all students had folders and within these folders was a folder called home, whatever went into this folder got shared with Mom or dad. I do realise there's nothing like the feeling of bringing home something you've built in school but this is an extension of that.

Teachers can work on the same document at the same time like a school report or an IT wish list.

Files like your AUP can feed straight from your google folder to your site . The workflow = create Doc, share doc to site, doc becomes visible on site. Next Workflow: edit doc on google drive and the edit automagically gets edited on the site, without having to take down and upload new docs.

By far my favourite feature is the google cal, you can embed this in your site meaning once the school calendar is changed by the teacher it's automatically changed on the school site, again eliminating logging on to dashboard removing content and uploading new stuff, same applies to photos .

Hi Paul and others…

By way of an overall view:

Essentially there are 3 retail companies who provide free services for education: Apple, Microsoft and Google

Each do {mostly} the same thing. Some main points to consider:

1) Deployment
2) Collaboration
3) Integration (with existing systems and others)
4) Ease-of-use
5) “Extras”

IMHO there is no one platform that has the best of everything. Moreover, many of the “Extras” which make life easier and are beneficial to staff are written by 3rd parties.

The 3 aforementioned platforms need to support these - SAS (software as a service) as well as either CSS/HTML apps are certainly the direction things are heading (for awhile now!)

For me: I would use GSuite on Apple devices. This is for me (currently) the best of both worlds.

I think teachers want to be able to create documents, share them easily and not have to worry about backup (although they damn well should!)

GSuite fits the bill here nicely. Easy file sharing and collaboration, unlimited storage (yes, really) and document creation. I’m personally not keen on Google’s suite of Office apps (Docs, Sheets, Slides) however, I’m a different user to others and do like the lack of complexity of them (Apple & Microsoft can sometimes have “too” many features). The fact they are only online is a bit of a detractor as well, but not a dealbreaker. (You can use them offline via a Chrome extension)

However, the sharing flexibility and storage clinches the deal for me. Add to that the “Extras” such as Google Cardboard, Explorers, Snapseed, YouTube, Classroom, Arts & Culture, Photosharing and many more…

To summarise: GSuite is the best all-rounder.

Many thanks,
Chris Reina

Hi Paul

G suite works well for the support team as they have to collaborate with all the classroom teachers so great place to store plans and CM. I am currently job sharing and use G Suite to work on documents with my job share partner.
Policies are always a good place to start as teachers can access them readily and comment or edit depending on the the settings. School self evaluation requires teachers to survey parents and students and this is easily done with Google forms.
We are looking at the new SEN model and deciding on where to store our data. We are considering Google Docs but have some reservations due to the sensitivity of the data. What are people's thoughts on the security aspect of storing sensitive data online?
I would love to see your list when it is complete as I am presenting to our staff later this month.

Thanks

Brenda

Another great feature for Education Edition is appointment scheduling - for students or parents
