Can I connect a student laptop to my laptop using bluetooth/wifi to show their work to the whole class?

I am not based in one classroom:

I travel to primary and secondary schools with 32 (Windows 10 lenovo) laptops. I bring my own projector in case the classroom projector or whiteboard isn't working.

If not bluetooth is there another way to do this?

I was working in a school in Meath recently that had a great system - you log in to the teacher pc, click on an icon, and up pops a window where you can see all students screens - and can select one to show on the large class screen - it was brilliant!

A few options:

Chromecast or similar wifi dongle if your projector is VGA you will need a HDMI female to VGA female adapter. If you are streaming from the web to the dongle it should be ok but most wifi display solutions I have see either suffer lag or downsampling.

Software wise there are classroom management solutions like ABTutor or Netsupport. They are €€€€

You can use a VNC client like Real VNC or Tight VNC to bring up all the screens but you may have network issues if not on your own wifi.

Chrome remote desktop but that can have latency issues.

My prefreed solution would be to use Google classroom to collect the work and show it all off the one laptop connected to the projector. You can use a wireless keybooard and touchpad to hand it around the room.

Thanks Conor - I will give google classroom a go.

Wireless keyboard and touchpad are a great idea! Will they really 'stretch' from a teacher laptop to student desk at back of class?

Best wishes

Eoin,

I use AB Tutor in my class and find it to be a bit laggy if you want to display your screen on the student's (or the other way around)  devices. There is a fee for the software but it is not too bad.

Alternatively, I have experimented with a software called Splashtop Classroom. I found that it is far superior quality although it lacks the management features of AB tutor.

If you want further info on either let me know.

Le meas,
P

Hi Eoin,

I would do this quite frequently when giving courses. (Albeit with Macs rather than Windows!) - however, the software is the same for both.

Remote Desktop is your friend here (and free). Also - I concur with Conor regarding your own WiFi vs. the Schools WiFi.

Splashtop Remote can be good, but you are generally connecting to the machine by going out before coming in again (if that makes sense). Also - paid for, but has lots of features (which you may not need)

I also like Chrome Remote Desktop - but again Conor is correct - it can be a bit laggy.

Google Classroom is excellent - especially as you have your own devices. If you are ever in a BOYD situation however, not so good.

For me, I use the following:

UniFi AP (pre-setup) - arrive in, plug into a cabled point. (Take one from another PC if need be)
Laptops/Tablets/etc. set to auto-connect to the AP
(Pre-Setup) Use Remote Desktop Assistant to setup on each PC
Use Remote Desktop on your own PC - each users PC shows a thumbnail of their screen on yours
You can click on any thumbnail to enlarge
Share your screen to the projector either wired or wirelessly (wired would be my preference - wireless can be laggy)
Don’t Mirror your screen - use extended Desktop and students won’t see your other work

When I give high-level Certification Courses - this is the setup I use. It’s great to keep my notes on the laptop and their screen to discuss their work on the projector.

Give me a shout if you need help setting up.

Cheers,

Chris

That's great thanks Chris!

Is there ever any issue of your Unifi AP wifi not being able to connect to the Internet through the ports - ie do some schools have the network ports restricted

And... Where can you buy a single Unifi AP?

Many thanks for all your help with this everyone - the CESI list really is a fantastic resource.

Best wishes,
Eoin

Hi Eoin,

No problem. The only time I’ve had issues with connection is when there is a login required. This usually only happens in 3rd level institutions where all machines require a login to access the internet.

I’ve never been to a Primary where this has been the case and only 1 very large Secondary.

As Greg pointed out - wicomstore.com has good pricing. They sometimes don’t have single APs however.

You could try openlogic.ie - a bit more expensive, but often have kit. You could also try pcsystems.ie

Talk soon,

Chris

Thanks for that Conor

€80 inc vat sounds good:

If anyone else is in the same position - bringing laptops into classrooms feel free to email me and I'll let you know how I get on.
I don't need internet to teach our modules, but I'm looking forward to sharing individual students work with the whole class.

Best wishes,

Note that is not a pro version of AP there are some differences.. The pro version has passthrough ethernet and 200 concurrent users Vs 100.

could you explain this Conor?  The usefulness/purpose of having passthrough ethernet
do we have to program anything, or do additional set up without it?

100 users more than enough.

best wishes,
Eoin

Pass-through simply allows you to insert the AP "inline" on a single wired connection enabling another device to be connected via pass-through port. Useful for locations where there is only a single data outlet.
