Hi All,

It was great to hear James, one of the folk involved in creating Audacity, at the CESI-Meet last night. For anyone who doesn't know the application it is a cross-platform open source audio editor - easy to use and powerful - one of those applications you should install on every computer in your school. Download it here http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ - Tons of tutorials on YouTube on how to use it.

I passed on his message to an Irish teacher in my school and she happily went in and did a few phrases as she uses Audacity.

It would be great if folk on the list could forward on James' message to the Irish teachers in their schools - a few phrases each will make a big dent in getting the job done.

largely translated into Irish by Micheál Mac Lochlainn,

Gearóid, Thank you!  

The latest, and much appreciated, translation that we have - and which we do distribute with Audacity - dates from I think 2005.  There are around 1,600 new phrases or words to translate that have come into Audacity since then, so the current version of Audacity is a mix of English and of Irish, when the Irish user interface is being used.  I added a note into the google doc last night to clarify that our crowd-sourcing is building on his work.  

I have also had several generous offers to check the entire translation over when it is complete.  As Micheál did the earlier translation I do want to give him 'first refusal' on doing that.

To use the existing Irish in Audacity you use 'preferences'.  

* In an earlier version of Audacity 'preferences' was the last item in the 'File' menu, but it has now moved to be the last item in the 'Edit' menu.

* Once you have preferences open, select 'Interface' (it's on the left) and then one of the buttons on the dialog will give you a choice of languages.

I've also, off list, had e-mail about the translation into Irish of "Special thanks:".  I don't have a word of Irish, but I have added in an 'internationalisation hint', that in Audacity this phrase comes before a list of names, and the translation needs to be close in meaning to "(With) Special thanks (to):".

Thanks to everyone who has contributed so far to the update of the translation of the Audacity user interface: Audacity in Irish (Google Doc)

I'll be closing this translation to crowd sourcing in just under a week's time, early on Friday 9th March.  People who approached me during the conference, Bianca, Pádraig, Fiona & Tomas with offers to help will then complete and check it, and the translation will get into an official general release of Audacity, Audacity 2.0.1, that is planned for the end of May.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has comments on the crowd sourcing, particularly anyone who visited the Google doc and has suggestions for improving the introductory instructions.  Would it help if the entries in the translation file that have some 'computer gibberish' in them were in a separate document?  What are the easiest steps that I could take that would improve the crowd sourcing process?  I want to learn from this.
