Advice and opinions on surface pro for principals use

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for all the great advice to date. 

If you use a surface pro on a day to day basis, would you mind sending me an email of pros and cons?

 

I have a principal who is looking at either:

buying a laptop and tablet, 

or 

buying a surface pro with keyboard cover and docking station.

The device(s) will be used on a day to day basis for timetabling in VSware, meetings etc and will be brought between work and home.

The school uses Microsoft office 365 cloud for storage and communication.

Surface pro is excellent!! We just started using them and staff live the ease of use... we too have 365 , the apps are great, the service from Wriggle is great, we're big fans after 4 weeks!

I’ve always found the following google search useful, before buying an item:

"item name problems”

where item name is, oddly enough, the name of the item. What I look for are current web pages describing issues with the device.

This search tends to tell me more than the more conventional

“item name review”  Which may just reflect eh level of paid advertising bought on the site by the manufacturer 

or 

“item name specs”

Which may refer to a previous model, as if a model takes off often the manufacturer will keep the name, and just change the model number,

or “item name manual filetype:pdf”

which will often just lead you to a generic site selling unrelated manuals, or manuals available from the manufacturer under some obscure product support tab.

I know there was a sound problem with some of the early surface Pro’s, where some internal fan would turn on and drown out the mic while you were recording video. I know this because I spent an afternoon trying to recover the sound track from some student assessment videos where this problem occurred.

be careful with review sites though!!

Surface Pro 4 is excellent,

 use One drive for storage as RAM not built to take a lot of video regardless of device,

   Just saying..

It depends on the purpose of the devices, and how cost sensitive you are. However I feel it might be an expensive solution. 

As a second point, I think that in deploying technology with our students, we may be hoping to give them general it skills and a familiarity with technology which they are likely to encounter outside the school context. A surface pro is still quite a specialised device, in comparison with a generic laptop, and may not be as appropriate in fulfilling this role.

  Laptops are gone.. once you start using the Surface Pro you see all the advantages,

  Its still Windows,

       Still Office

       the most likely OS they will meet in college and work.

How robust are they? Will have 100 pupils a day/ 300 a week using a class set. In more than 5 years of using iPads in the school, we have had to replace 1 device and maybe 2 cracked screens. I know there is the option of Bluetooth keyboards with the iPads but we would definitely like to have the option of a Windows keyboard device as well as the iPads.

  we got lovely protective covers in Leather - Maroo cases.. 

   No issues,

   Charging about the same as iPads 8 hours +

we just got ours in Sept,

I would not advise on using surface pro in a classroom, they are not robust enough for that type of wear and tear.

There are Chromebooks that are toughened enough that they cab be dropped form 1.5 metres without damage and are  much cheaper

But if you really want a Windows device then there are also Notebooks that are designed for schools and should be capable of everyday classroom use
