Came across an issue today and I would like to know if anybody else has come across it and what the solution was.

The panel is using Android 4.2 which apparently does not work with the latest version of Chrome or Internet Explorer for security reasons.

The panel is about 10 years old and the school has a number of them. They are working perfect in every other way.

Has anybody updated the android version on an older panel?

Thanks in advance.

Kindest regards

You would have to check with the manufacturer to see what versions they have released. It's usually on their website. I doubt you will get a modern version of Android for a ten year old device but there may have been a couple of years of updates that might bring you up a bit.

Thanks Con.

I believe the panel should still work albeit the Android is old.

Hi Joe

Android 4.2 is Jellybean and was launched in October 2012, your panel is more likely 10 years old rather than 5, you can see some info on Jellybean here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_Jelly_Bean

Android 8/Android Oreo was launched in 2018 which is a very popular system used on a lot of displays.

I'd say you are lucky to have got this amount of time out of it, it must be a sturdy display.

Google wouldn't support an older browser as the security would be out of date, they stopped supporting Jellybean in August 2021, it'd be like keeping a mobile phone for 10 years, none of the apps would work on the phone.  It could open your screen/school up to viruses.

I'd say your options are to connect an external PC to the display or try loading a newer browser if the display would support that.  You could try opera mini, lightning or jelly, but I don't know what the security implications may be.

Best

Stephen

Thanks for the feedback Stephen.

Yes we were originally told by the manufacturer that the panels (there are 2 of the same model in the school) were 10 years old.  The school pulled out the invoice and they are actually only 5 years old.

This is the only panel with the issue so what the manufacturer said does not make sense.

Joe

Whats the make and model number? They may have been held inventory in terms of updates i.e. they design might have been a couple of years old when bought .
