Hi,

We are exploring the possibility of removing teacher desktops and I'm wondering what people's experiences are with individual teacher devices.

Would the Surface Go 2 be suitable (touchscreen required to expedite feedback on written work posted digitally) for teachers needs i.e. casting to projector or screen, usual office applications, youtube etc. We are a G-Suite school so storage shouldn't be an issue.

Any suggestions on the best/most suitable devices would be appreciated. Hope everyone is enjoying the fine weather!

Kind regards,

Hi Colm,

My tuppence worth! The Lenovo thinkpad (yoga version) is the one that folds right back into a tablet but is also a powerful laptop! Great value for money although they would still be considered expensive in and around the €800 price range but is a little cheaper than the surface or MacBook Pro! They also may be cheaper now!

Here’s why I loved it in the classroom:

- dual use of tablet/ laptop used the tablet mode while teaching and the laptop for everything else. We were an iPad school and this one device replaced the iPad and a desktop after i got comfortable with it!
- comes with an inbuilt pen and the hand writing function of this works really well with digital inking on OneNote and PDF’s! Great for correcting and marking! Quick and easy - I also used this to write melodies live in the classroom so kids could see what I was doing while discussing why I was choosing notes and the rationale behind the chords.... this could also be used for working out maths problems and any other subject that requires demos or sample Answers!
- student work uploaded was also be corrected live in classroom or in a virtual environment too! Talking through the corrections with the students while they had the visual!
- it’s neat and lightweight... easy to carry from class to class. I had an older version... mine was purchased in 2014 and is still being used today! I’m sure what’s available today is even sleeker!

We equipped all our teachers with Surface go last year.  Best decision ever.  Wriggle gave us the best price.  we also bought display adapters for each room.  some projectors needed to be changed.

Smooth transition to remote learning.

Best wishes

The major challenge is supply...

There seems to be a shortage of nearly everything...

+1 on Daniel on this.

Global shortages means you will not get hold of any quantity until late Sept or early October at this point.

Thanks. We are looking at a long term solution, and want to make the correct choice so the delay wouldn't be a major issue. Thanks again.

Good morning,
Thank you all for your input. We are a gsuite school with Promethean boards . The pupils share Acer Chromebooks.(under new Covid arrangements) My colleagues love the Chromebooks but decided to stay with laptops for now. We need info ew devices and I like the idea of Lenova Yoga or Think Pad.
I need to know if Active Inspire is compatible and basically if The Lenova works in every way as a Window's laptop.
Any advice, Yvonne and others, most appreciated.
Kind  regards,

Hi,

As a G-Suite school would a very high end, touchscreen Chromebook be suitable?

Or are there enough apps to meet the flexible needs of a team of secondary teachers?

Hi Paul,

Most of our teachers are now using google apps exclusively instead of Microsoft but prefer to stay with laptops for now. We are considering the Lenovo Yoga or Thinkpad but are worried re apps compatibility, exactly as you mention, especially ActivInspire for Promethean IWBs which does not work on Chromebooks.

Logic tells me they are straightforward Windows laptops. Has anyone used them with Promethean Boards?

Kathleen
