Absolutely agree.  Around the 30 minute part, there's some amazing footage of kids collaborating and problem solving and learning so much!  Anyone who thinks handheld devices such as DS Lites, etc. make children less sociable needs to see this.

Thanks for finding this Conor

The best spent 52 minutes of my weekend. Truly wonderful stuff. Reinforces a lot of what was said at the Inventorium symposium on Digital Learning at the Science Gallery last week.

Hi all!
I need to buy myself a laptop, and have just begun a job teaching in a school where I have a computer in my classroom. I'd love to buy a Mac, but have heard that there may be compatibility issues. Can anyone tell me if you've come across problems with, for example, Word documents or PowerPoint presentations prepared on one being opened/edited on the other? Is there software commonly used in schools (eg Photostory) that cannot be uploaded on a Mac?

Hi there,
I've been using a MacBook at home since October and the school I work at uses PCs. I use iWork the Mac version of Microsoft Office. There is an option to save as word or powerpoint. Personally, I have had no problems swapping back and forth at all.
Don't think you can use Photostory on Mac but you can watch the films if you download the VLC application. I figure if there is anything I can't do on my Mac (which hasn't happened yet!) then I'd borrow a school laptop to do it.

Hope that helps.

My children often use a Mac at home with MS word 2004 to do school work. We have ocasionaly encountered problems where a document created on the mac did not display images when transferred to the PC.
The problem shows up as a dialog box suggesting that Quick-time is necessary to view this image on the PC.  Quick-time is installed on the PC and is up to date, however this does not resolve the problem.
In the cases where it had occurred the solution, for us, has been to just reinsert the images from the original websites, on the PC.
This is a known problem.

You should also note that Iwork is not office for Mac, see this page for details:

Iwork can produce MS office compatible files, as can open office, which is available for both platforms.

I've been using Macs and Windows PCs since 1985 for a wide range of design, writing and teaching tasks. I have very occasionally had problems with Microsoft Office compatibility but these have been extremely rare and usually due to the other person having an old version of Windows Office programmes. Also once or twice PDF files created from the Mac version of Microsoft Office programmes have not been readable when sent to Windows users by email.

You can solve these few problems if you wish by running Windows on a Mac using VMWare or Parallels but you have to have an actual licensed copy of Windows for your Mac to do this as well as the VMWare or Parallels software.

My advice would be get a Mac Book Pro if you can afford it to have the processing power for the "run windows" solution if needed and so that the computer becomes obsolete less quickly. If you find you are having problems then you can try running Windows on it but I wouldn't bother buying Windows to start with - I find I use it less and less. Also I'd suggest categorising the bits of software in use in your school which are Windows only and assessing whether there are cloud or Mac solutions which could be used instead.

PS get an iPad or other tablet if you can as well...
