Hi all,

Our new school building started on Monday. At long last.....

We would love to record the build in some way. I was thinking a time lapse video over the 20 months of construction would be amazing to have.

Has anyone done anything like this before? What technology/camera would be needed for this? We probably would need to have something mounted at a height to take in the view.  Any suggestions are welcome.

Thank you,

Emma, Culleens NS, Ballina, Co. Mayo

Hi Emma,

Congratulations! Lovely to hear. 👍🏼

What a great idea - and opportunity for a Maker project.

First thought… Raspberry Pi with camera in waterproof casing. Time lapse images taken intermittently and only when required.

You can log in remotely and turn it on and off (for days where there’s nothing happening)

Some setup required - but would be amazing to have at the end!

Chris

We used a GoPro (or equivalent much cheaper Lidl/VikingDirect clone) in a weather proof case. Mounted high on existing building.

You will need easy and safe access to swap the memory card and battery.

For some phases you may want to decrease/increase the interval between images.

Ideally you have 2 cameras - one that you leave in a fixed reference spot and take 1 image per hour or 1 per day. And have a mobile camera (and tripod) that you move about to places of interest and do mini-clips over a shorter overall time.

It's worth in in the end - especially if you use a suitably frantic sound track

How ya,

Time laps is a great idea and both the suggestions so far have been great, I’m a fan of the simple approach and it would be lovely to get a few people involved.

I’ve done this with a few community groups and it works well, set up a few stands / tripods around the school and each day take a photo from that point if you have three different points then you have three different angles, import the lot into a photoshop type of software and save them as a movie , giving each image 1second (or less you won’t know the speed until the end of the project .

I would use the other suggestions for recording times when school is out .

I did a project like this in a school in Galway (not my idea, read it on #edchatie , get masking take and tape up a box the size of a phone (or a device they’re allowed to use in school) on the window and ask (trusted students) to take a image of the outside each time they passed . The end of year result if lovely .

I pass through Ballina most weeks happy to chat to you a bit more about it.

Much simpler idea is a wildlife camera. Sometimes in Lidl or Aldi but easy enough to pick up on Amazon. As well as being great for motion tracking any wildlife that visit the area after dark most have a Timelapse option too. Battery should last months too so no need to be constantly visiting it unless the card is filling up. Some can also be accessed remotely but that’s probably something you won’t need. I have one set up in the school at the moment keeping an eye on a fox we have around.

We used a drone to record updates on build progress. If you did a drone pass regularly and cut it together it could make for nice video:

The cameras in this thread all have the “time-Lapse” feature build into the software .

There used to be a saying - not sure whether it is PC any more (but Mr Hegarty will ban me if it is not!)
